The 49ers biggest allies: Rain and Wind

For me, the biggest factor in the game on Sunday will be drenching the 49ers Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. It's the rain and wind of January San Francisco weather. While the Giants are used to the cold and snow, their offense is not built for the unique below-sea-level slop of Candlestick Park. The Giants are better prepared than the Saints would have been, but my feeling is the rain and wind will determine the winner.

Disagree. Bad weather and field conditions tend to level out the playing field and give advantage to the lesser team; in this case the Giants.

Not when that lesser team has a more potent passing attack which is what the adverse conditions mainly affect (well kicking too).

Adverse conditions always give the advantage to the better defensive and running team.

Don't try and argue with the Pantshitter -- he can find a grey cloud in any silver lining.

Don't get it twisted, the Giants can play in inclement weather. As a matter of fact, I would rather us play them in fair weather like we did earlier this year. In bad weather, Gore will start tripping and sliding Willis and Bowman would not be as fast. Right now we have the advantage if we were playing in good weather. The rain is somewhat of a blow to us.

no comment on the slop but think we still want the wind?

this isn't a big factor but still, Andy Lee and David Akers have more experience in SF. what about catching punts?

How is it a blow to us, but not them? If it slows down Willis and Bowman, it will slow down Bradshaw and Jacobs, along with their LBs. The rain will affect both teams the same and slow them both down. If anything, which ever team is best suited for running the ball, will benefit the most.

At this point, I'm not so sure the 49ers have the best run game - I'd say it's pretty even. However our run defense is much better.

We may receive a slight advantage in the kicking game - both Lee and Akers have had plenty of time kicking at The Stick and its windy conditions.

agree. our run game isn't so much better, but our run D is. so as long as they don't get their run game going early, and wearing us down.

Agreed! Whatever our run game is, the last time we played the Giants it was non-existent

That was by choice if you recall. The Giants were expecting us to run, run, run and stacked the box. We threw all day, to everyone's surprise. I think this time around we use a lot more Hunter and run more than the 20 times we did in November.

Frank Gore was injured for that game, hopefully on Sunday he's healthier and capable of creating Pro Bowl-like stats.

You could argue that bad weather favors the QB with the stronger arm too.

Me too, the stadium probably won't be rocking if it is raining... being wet and cold just sucks the energy out of you...

ahhh ok, if they stack the box again, then we'll have to pass more. doesn't need to be so vertical, but lets not force the run against a stacked box.

why don't we throw more slants? we don't have a WR who's good at it? not one of Alex's better throws? or combination thereof? Alex's first past Saturday was a slant to Crabtree. cause this route is almost impossible for a CB to defend?

Disagree again. A wet field is an advantage to the receiver who knows where he is going whereas the defender who is trying to react will be slower or perhaps slip down. As for a sloppy field helping the running game; I believe it hurts the running team who can't get traction for cuts and forward movement.

this seems like a 'breakdown of parts' in response to a big picture approach?

not sure but just seems like it?

You're right. High winds and inclement weather are the best friend of a quarterback and passing game. It's why the Bears have had so many passing titles and Drew Brees cut a hole in the Superdome.

So, as we see weather effects everything. I'd like to beat them because we're better, not because of weather. And if we lose because they're better, I won't be coming on here wishing the weather was worse. Having to choose the two, however, I'd choose the win with lucky weather over the fair weather loss, of course. I'm not THAT principled. I don't believe in may the best man win. I believe in may my team win and I hope it's because we're better (assuming no bad call victory).
