A lot of those guys were great friends too...off the court. But they remained bitter rivals on the court. And they all wanted to make sure they had bragging rights for life over each other.

Exactly. I don't really see it as all that different than it used to be. They spend the first 3 quarters trying to "out highlight reel" each other, then somewhere in the 4th quarter their competitive natures kick in and they start trying to win.
