Robert Griffin was sacked five times against the Vikings. Some were calling for Colt McCoy to get the start in this game, but McCoy's career sack percentage of 7.9% is actually higher than Griffin's at 7.7%. Those may not be the best numbers to look at however. According to Pro Football Focus, Griffin's average time to throw of 3.08 seconds and average time to attempt of 2.94 seconds in 2014 would rank 33rd and 35th (last) respectively among quarterbacks with over 25% or more of their team's snaps. McCoy's 2.73 and 2.38 seconds would rank 20th and 8th respectively in those categories this year.

here are the numbers about holding the ball too long

last in the NFL for getting the ball out

66 views and not one comment from anyone , but particularly, from the criticism crowd on the film showing that some of the things he did in the pocket were improvements

it is hard for anyone not to think that most of this is about hate when you cant simply acknowledge his improvements

just saying , a fair person would have had the guts to man up and say well he did do something here

doesnt mean Rg3 is the answer but again you make yourselves look like haters , which you say you arent , when you cant acknowledge the good too

Griffin
The Minnesota Vikings sacked Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III five times Sunday -- and a big topic for the past few days was his penchant for holding the ball too long. But not every sack resulted because of Griffin's indecision. Failed blitz pickups and the need for stronger protection by the line contributed as well. Overall, Griffin was solid in his first game back; 26 points on the road vs. a team starting an inconsistent rookie quarterback should have been enough. Here's what happened during that 29-26 loss:
On the first sack, for example, Griffin only had the ball for 2.4 seconds before he went down. This one was on the protection as the Vikings sent two linebackers through the same gap -- between the center and left guard -- the second on a delay. Only running back Roy Helu was in the way as center Kory Lichtensteiger slid the other way. Had Helu slowed the first linebacker at all, Griffin had tight end Jordan Reed breaking free on a corner route. Instead, Griffin was sacked.
The second sack came off a bootleg -- when Griffin turned, end Everson Griffen was coming at him. He still could have thrown the ball to Reed, though Griffen might have blocked his vision. Or Griffin could have swung it to the left flat. But he tried to run up. Left tackle Trent Williams and left guard Shawn Lauvao had largely stopped blocking because the play had gone away from them. But as Griffin scrambled up the middle, either one could have blocked a Vikings lineman, right at the line of scrimmage. Neither did; they watched Griffin come at them. That forced the quarterback to try and make another cut and Griffen pounced on him. So Griffin could have thrown the ball; his line could have helped more.
Griffin could have avoided sack No. 3 by throwing an underneath cross to Reed. The real problem is that Minnesota caused issues for Washington's protection by making it appear linebacker Anthony Barr would rush. Lichtensteiger set his way but Barr did not rush. Guard Chris Chester, anticipating the end coming inside, and tackle Tom Compton blocked one rusher -- the end who happened to go wide instead. When a blitzer came through this gap, Helu slid over, tried to block him too high and Chester's last-second lunge provided no impact; sacked in 2.7 seconds.
Sack No. 4 featured extending the play -- Griffin was in the pocket for 3.6 seconds and sacked at 5.8. He ran to the left and tried to set up to throw, but it was too late. He had a chance earlier on the play to hit Pierre Garcon on an out-route to the left; he was open after he cut.
The last sack definitely could have been avoided and showed poor pocket presence. Minnesota rushed four, and drove the Redskins' interior too deep. But Griffin could have maneuvered better, but lacked a feel for the pressure, stepped up and was sacked. The problem: Helu was open for a checkdown and would probably have gained 10 yards. Instead of a third and short, they faced third and 20.
On the third and 20 run, Griffin gained 14 yards before sliding. Two years ago he probably gains more, by trying to dart between two on-coming defenders -- and he might have made it, too. But the risk this time appeared too much. He could have thrown a hitch on the left side to Santana Moss that would have gained about the same or possibly a couple more yards. Griffin took off after 4.8 seconds, put his eyes down and ran.
He did a nice job extending a third-and-5 play for eight yards to Helu. Griffin might have been able to throw earlier, but this is a case of him waiting to make sure. Regardless, on the move he was drifting back but he planted and threw a nice ball to Helu.

seems like 2 sacks are clear cut his 2 are on protection and 1 both parties

Good analysis Skinsdad. Not sure which scenario (above) that is was, but there is a video clip on ES that dramatically shows the Redskins O-line issues. On the play Williams actually effectively blocks two Vikings. At the same time #52 for the Vikings gets through Chester & Lich & for a brief time Helu.

To me that play dramatically exposes Chester to be pretty worthless. Regardless of the QB play that guy needs to be replaced soon. He is just quite simply not a starting NFL lineman.

Even better - you prove your pt by using the analysis of someone who probably knows the Redskins better than any of us. Regardless - this just exposes that there are certainly more issues than simply at the QB position (last game that should have been obvious since basically the defense lost the game).

Read the whole thing.... good stuff there.

Part of the problem is that all sacks are not equal. A sack on 1st and 10 that is followed by two nice plays and the drive keeps going, is quickly forgotten. A sack on 3rd down on the edge of FG range costs us 3 points. A sack on 3rd down in the red zone when a guy is open for a TD costs us 4 points. And a sack on 4th down with under 2 minutes to play costs us the game.

I think people here are generally fair enough to let RGIII off for sacks that are completely not his fault, but a few of his sacks cost us points, and those ones at the end of the game cost us a chance to tie and go to OT. Those that were his fault are game changing plays. He needs to fix that stuff if we're going to win. Not to harp on Colt, but he avoided the big negative plays generally and got whatever points were there to get. He (Colt) did have one drive where he got us into the Red Zone then we took a bad penalty, then he took a sack and we ended up punting, but overall he didn't leave too much on the board. RGIII needs to get better about avoiding the big negative plays at the crucial times. If he does that, we'll be in very good shape. Big, big if though... not sure when he's supposed to start doing that.

Was planning on making a post about deep balls and DJax. Certainly Griffin threw a couple of nice balls to him. When you look at the year to this point you can say the same for all three QBs. Knowing that I think that says a lot more about DJax than it does about Griffin, Cousins or McCoy.

Absolutely. One of the priorities has to be to take advantage of Jackson's skills - particularly his tremendous separation skills. That is one of the reasons that I believe that McCoy is not the long term answer. He just doesn't have the arm to get the ball to anyone deep on a regular basis. Not saying necessarily that the other QBs are the answer just that I don't see McCoy in that role.
