OH i agree. But looking at this defense was like looking at your car and saying... well I know I got four balled tires. But what I really think would get the job done is spinners.

ok, but he is starting from scratch.

He has to start somewhere.

Honestly ... would any team offer us anything for any of our defensive players ?

Kerrigan might get a 2nd or 3rd, lol

we cant fix every issue in one off season we have a couple of drafts to go before we are ready to be contenders year in and year out

The problem with this line of thinking is...

We are in year three of Grudens contract, and year two of SMGM.

If we finish 6-10 as I expect, Gruden gets fired, Kirk is gone, and you add two more years onto the "rebuild" minimum. We will also have an owner and a fan base screaming for a "franchise" QB, meaning you can once again kiss any real commitment to the D-line goodbye.

Agreed... and I can even accept why he took Doctson over a D-lineman in the draft. But if you dont question the idea of going into the season with Reyes, Hood and Backer... Well.. you know where Im going. Sure you cant fill ever hole in one year. But going in with purely backups on two out of three spots has got to be questioned.

i am asking, because i am clueless how functional teams operate ...

but lets say Harbaugh up in charm city had some bad years ...

would replacing the coach be an Ozzie decision ?

or does ownership make that call ?

OH Ozzie makes the call. But you also have to figure for a team with our history.. pickings will be slim. Hell the Niners are three years removed from a Super Bowl appearance, and the best coach they could get was Chip Kelly. There has not been a coach to complete a contract here in DC in over 20 years, and the only one worth a fart to walk on his own terms was Gibbs 2. Some of us think Gruden needs to be fired, but careful what you wish for. Most coaches worth anything will steer clear of this team despite SMGM being here.

of course the GM is questioned ...

i personally question the hell out his decision to allow Morris to walk (over 2-3 million?) because the OC wanted to play RB marry-go-round last year ... i swear Gruden is clueless when it comes to that position.

but we dont fully understand the numbers behind what McCloughan might have been trying to put on the table as far as an offer for Cousins .... which could have held them back from pursing potential free agents.

See I got the feeling that the RB by committee thing was partly coach, but more the GM last year. I think it was decided by mid season that we would be moving on without resigning Morris, so it needed to be figured out if Jones could be the feature back.

OH Ozzie makes the call.

well, i hope this is the case here & if so, hopefully, SM will understand why his defense is so porous & allow gruden & McVay to continue to mature

he might get some leverage where the defensive coordinator is concerned ...

why is joe berry a gruden guy anyway ? never understood that connection.

Huge play for the pick. The defense again refuses to blitz on 3rd and long but we get two fumble recoveries and a huge pick by Norman in Cle own end to setup the TD. I think both FF were caused by both ILB's. See Shark, Carolina does miss Norman. Look at what Atl did to them today. Remember we had this argument that Carolina wasn't going to miss Norman. You need Cb's period.

That pick was big. Josh came close to getting a pick in his first three games. It was only a matter of time. That time couldn't have came in a better time. I was actually at the game for my first visit to FedEx Field. The pick was, so impressive. I could see Terrelle Pryor hold Josh and he just dove in and made the pick. Impressive! Josh has been what the doctor ordered for us, as a CB. He's broken up passes. Made good tackles. Forced some fumbles, as well, as recovered some. Sure! He's given up some passes and one TD, which was not totally his fault. I just wished the whole defense had his pulse, especially our run-defense. Isiah Crowell, just had his way with us.

that would be too much for a GM to micro manage a coach on how to run his offense tho

i just think Gruden is clueless when it comes to the needs of a RB

Because as much as people call for his head, gruden aint dumb.

Lets say he had hired Wade last year and we started out poorly. Well no one is going to fire Gruden and Promote Barry. But had we started out poorly, people would have been screaming to fire Gruden and let Wade ride out the season. Never hire some one who can take your job if you arent secure in your job to begin with.

Really..... look back at the performances he got from his RBs with the Bengals. The man isnt stupid. And you dont try and replace a back who has been productive, for a kid who is a rookie without some one pulling strings in the background. It wouldnt require micro managing.

One sentence... we arent going to resign Morris, so you better figure it out with Jones.

there was no financial reason for Scot to care ... i mean, if Morris was about to get paid, then sure, i could see him, maybe, giving the coach some kinda ultimatum ... like, "the numbers arent adding up"

but ... honestly ... its the scheme.

Morris is a one cut & go, Shanahan style back .... where Gruden wants more of power back.

If only we could combine Mikes running game with Grudens passing.

You are discounting the oldest reason in the book for presumed smart people to make stupid decisions.

EGO.

SMGM believes his own press that he is the master talent scout. He felt that he could find some one to produce better than Morris for 1/3 the price. Now maybe in the long run Jones does work out. But its funny how Morris is working out as a power back (granted as a backup) in Dallas

I will say it like this as far as our GM and the coach goes.

If Gruden doesnt get this team to at least contend for the division, he is gone. Barry will be gone with him.

I think our GM has a short list of people he would like to try and hire as a coach. That list starts with Jim Harbaugh, then goes to Darrell Bevell.

Gruden either proves he is a coaching genius and at minimum finishes 2nd in the division, or he is gone.

Oh dont get me wrong, the kid has talent. But as usual w went for the sexy pickup instead of looking at actual needs. If any one thinks we are better off with Norman over one or two legit D-lineman at this point.. .I do have to question their sanity.

Let me preface my observation with this.....things change.

Right now, I see us landing a top ten pick in the upcoming draft (Sticking with my 6-10 prediction) couple that with the enormous cap cash and there's one guy who's gonna be happy....Dan Snyder. I say this because it is both good fortune and an albatross considering the history. That sexy pickup will be multiplied 10 fold as we grind our teeth hoping this time things will be different. I believe that the signing of Norman is merely the beginning of a defensive retooling that's gonna have most of us here Googling new names for days. Will it work this time?, stay tuned!!

(SN: Almost any possible retooling seems better than what we currently have )

I will say this. IF we finish 6-10 we will be looking for a coach and a QB. I honestly dont think Kirk is or ever could be good enough for this owner and fan base. I think Kirk caps out at a Trent Dilfer/Alex Smith/ Joe Flacco level. A guy who can be solid, and given enough talent around him you can win with. But the owner and fan base want an elite guy that sells jerseys and is in the MVP conversation every year.

So while we might get that top ten pick, and might even have boat loads of cash, there wont be a defensive retooling unless its of the kind the Giants just did. If we finish 6-10 priority #1 will be a QB.

If...and I say again....IF your scenario plays out and SM opts for a current (albeit newly fired) HC or some O or D coordinator, I'm gonna be forced to snap off a very angry letter to DS and his FO. BTW: I maintain that the guy SM likely has in mind is David Shaw of the Stanford Cardinal. He fits perfectly with SM big front line(s) philosophy and btw Kirk Cousins will flourish in that sort of system.

Big news here is that we are already talking about this!! SAD!!
