Over 400+ in his first game as a pro..... Too bad he can't read NFL defense, huh?

Hey, if folks can pile on Kramer for his 0-16, can't we pile on all the Cam haters? The guy made plays today - Just like he did in college.

The haters will say, "yeah, well he didn't win." Yet, if he did win and only pass for 100 yards they would say they won despite him. The kid has a bunch of talent and he'll be good.

Kevin Kolb threw for 391 yards in his first start. Not saying that was a fluke or that he's a bust, just saying one game doesn't really mean anything. Cam could be a great player, and he was definitely impressive in his first game. But I don't think one game proves anything, no matter how good or bad it is.

It's not that hard to see. He isn't Vick, he can throw from the pocket now. He can read defenses now, he has poise, he is accurate, and he just makes plays. Star in the making.

I'm not crowning the kid, but if you read some of the posts from Vance or Crash during draft season, his performance today is kinda funny.

Hey, if we're going to pile on me for Newton, then Tubbs deserves some flak for the Kolb comments. If I recall, he said Kolb was just as much crap as I said Newton was.

I did and was wrong. Though mostly what I said was that I wouldn't trade a 1st or a 2nd for him. He hadn't shown anything showing he was worth trading for. But I also said he had a chance to be good. Just as everyone does, especially when put in the right situation.

Regardless, right now, after 1 game, you just can't absolutely say either one will repeat their performance. They both looked good this week. That's all you can say.

I'm not saying you can but everyone said he could read defenses and he read them like a vet. Everyone said he couldn't be accurate and he was. He was a pocket QB today. He isn't Vick or Young. He is a QB.

One game and everyone is jumping in the Cam bandwagon. He had 4 crappy pre-season games. Lets see how his first year goes.

Cam Newton was amazing... 430 yds in his first start is so good I'll jump on the bandwagon after only 1 week...

but just to nitpick, I think he has to throw that last pass past the 1st down marker

The Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton looked better than even his staunchest supporter had any right to expect. And I am not his staunchest supporter. There's no question he made throws I didn't think he could make, and the chemistry he has already with Steve Smith is palpable. But please, please, please don't get too carried away. Newton threw to his first read an alarming number of times, often regardless of whether he was covered. And more importantly, the Arizona Cardinals' defense is putrid. I mean, putrid. CB Patrick Peterson, the No. 5 overall pick in April's draft, was thrown at more than a dunking-booth attendant, and Kerry Rhodes couldn't catch a cold. For me, this story is less about whether you're starting Newton going forward (you're not, not yet) than it is about using Rex Grossman against the Cardinals in Week 2.

Well then.... If internet author/fantasy football guru Christopher Harris doubts Cam's abilities, I suppose we all should. I mean, it's Christopher Harris.

I thought Cam wasn't even capable of calling an NFL play, let alone throw for 400+

i know we should take everyones first game as showing how awesome of a career he would have.

Would you say a rookie QB throwing for 221 yards and 2 TD's in his debut would be a good QB?

I highlighted the bolded section for a reason. It really wasn't (much of) a subjective comment.

Additionally, some experts in this very thread have claimed that Cam was reading defenses like a vet. This was simply supplied as a rebuttal. I will take Harris' word over said "experts" who probably didn't even watch the game.

BTW, I think Henne is also the next coming. He's finally broke his stride. Broke out of his shell. Turned the corner. He also had 400+ yards.

Newton's performance was amazing when looked at in the context of his preseason.....he looked like a deer in the headlights against the Bengals, so first reads or no, his opener was amazing....his physical talents are obvious....the second td pass to Smith was a thing of beauty.....he will, however, most likely struggle when facing top defenses at first.....

Henne did play well.... He might have better numbers now that he has a better coordinator. Of course, it won't help that he has no running game - As highlighted by that awful playcall for a fade on 4th and inches from the goal-line.

I'd also mention that the Dolphins played from behind all night and Henne got a lot of yards in the 4th when they were 2 scores down - But I digress.....

I'm not saying Cam Newton will have an MVP or even an above average season. My only point was that he had many haters that said he couldn't read defense or pass against a D and that his only asset was his legs. For now, that assessment is in question.
