youve awaken the Dick Pounder

CANOE -- SLAM! Sports - NHL - Pound weighs in on NHL drug debate

“Many say it privately, but very few are willing to put it between the covers of a book. The real challenge right now is, ‘What is hockey going to do with it?’ Are they going to trash him like baseball did to (Jose) Canseco or say, ‘Alright, there’s a problem — let’s acknowledge it and deal with it.’”
:L

Id have a different opinion if Laraque named some names ... but until then ... he's just trying to sell a book

I wouldn't be surprised at all if several players use PED's, but calling it a problem would be highly doubtful.

The guys I can see using them would be the fighters/enforcers that I typically detest.

We'll see if they start naming names, but until then I doubt there are a large number of users among the skilled players. Hockey just is not that kind of sport that needs PED's to improve. (Baseball, football, wrestling, boxing)

I don't think the NHL has a huge problem with steriod abuse, although I'm sure a handful of players have dabbled in the past (enforcers and fringe players) and likely continue to do so today.

However, when it comes to items like HGH and stimulants, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a fair number of prominent NHL players utilize them.

I guarantee you there is drugs being used by NHL players to enhance performance. A big one: Claritin, and other like drugs. Cold-medication, when taken without need, enhances reaction time. I spoke to a woman involved with the Flyers once who said goalies pop those things all the time. So, steroids? Maybe not, but like every other sport, these guys take in whatever gives them the advantage.

I know that I am personally concerned with the steroid use in hockey. Just look at Martin St. Louis. You know that guy is on massive roids. And he has to be, there is no other way a midget could ever make the NHL.

Plus I think that everyone is well acquainted with Semin's roid rage fight?

I totally use Claritin. Every day.

Oh yeah.

what im thoroughly confused by is that Dick Pound says that the NHL only tests during the season yet the NHL CBA says that players can be subject to "no-notice" tests at any time ... so is the Dick Pounder wrong???

As far as Claritin, is that on the WADA list of banned substances which the NHL uses?

Not sure really. I imagine it isn't, but that list has some funky stuff. I was merely showing it as something being abused. Honestly, consuming large amounts of caffeine has a similar affect. In fact, caffeine is a performance enhancing drug, and certain levels are considered illegal.

players are known to hit their coffee hard ... just watch the sometimes-on-tv shots of them arriving at the arenas in their suits ... coffee cup almost always in hand

my brother used to gather sound bites on gamedays and he said the players coffee breath overpowered the stench of their equipment

I think I exceed those levels daily...

I know firsthand of one former player (played for the Sabres among others) who definitely used steroids in his first years in the league. He wasn't much of a player and certainly not a top 6 forward.

In all likelihood Ray Emery used anabolic steroids. The degeneration of his hip was caused by avascular necrosis. The primary risk factor, among healthy young men, for that disease is anabolic steroid abuse.

I don't think that steroid use is rampant in the NHL but, with the salaries being forked out to even marginal players, there are surely a fair number out there willing to take the risk.

The NHL season is the toughest in pro sports. With 82 games plus playoffs I'm sure that even skilled players would welcome the improved recovery time that comes with the use of steroids, HGH, and whatever other crap they've thought up.

IMO, the NHL needs to make sure this isn't a problem and doesn't become a problem. Slightly increased testing and education (regarding risk factors) at the junior level would be a good idea. More sever penalties for infractions would also be welcome.

Well if Flyers goalies have been using them they obviously don't work very well so why bother. :bolt:

Andy Moog loved his "Sudies". He popped a couple of Sudafed before every game late in his career.

Sports Illustrated did a big story on NHLers over using Pseudoephedrine in the late 90s.
