I agree with Trojan. Defending yourself doesn't necessarily mean fighting back. Just because he is smaller doesn't mean he is weaker. There is nowhere in the article that says he got hit from behind. It just said she started the altercation. She said she made the first contact of the altercation.

If the female is clearly far more dangerous and looking for serious harm, I say fight back. If female is using a weapon, fight back is fair. Any way that seriously makes it unfair, fighting back is fair.

This does not seem like that. She isn't all that bigger. She is 5'9, he is 5'8. He was obviously in good enough condition to give out harm, so the blow couldn't be too bad.

Now, I think the penalty against him is harsh. I think felony is a bit extreme for this crime. She threw the first punch and it connected. Felony is a very serious charge that could have major affect on his life.

Yeah, the felony is too serious and will likely be dropped to a misdemeanor before it goes to court.

Gender plays no role in my decision to defend myself against someone who is a threat. It would be foolish of me to underestimate someone's determination to hurt/kill me just because they might be a women.

One final thought for the poster who said they would just bear hug a distressed and combative women until they calmed down. Yeah right, asshole.... Talk to any police officer, prison guard or someone who works at a psychiatric hospital and asked them how easy it is to restrain a person, no matter their size.

I grew up in a bad neighborhood with plenty of women who were not afraid to start shit but I only saw stupid guys get themselves in situations like that. You guys are making it sound like she was trying to kill the guy. You are also making it sound like she attacked him from behind and he was defenseless.

I heard nothing about him having a concussion. I saw nothing about being attacked from behind. I saw nothing about attack. It just said she threw the first punch and it contacted him. It didn't say where it landed, at least none of the sources posted said it. It did say he hit her in her face, which is causing surgery.

You guys talk about how he is way smaller. He's 5'8, she is 5'9 and he weighs 165 in his rivals scouting report. I couldn't find hers, but I don't think she looks 165. I would also bet he is stronger than she is, given he has a scholarship to a Big 12 program.

Sorry man, but there is a difference between assaulting a woman and returning volley. I'm sure there are plenty of situations where a woman hits a guy that the right thing to do is walk away, but every situation? No. Once a woman crosses the line into physical violence it should remove that restriction. Doesn't mean a guy has to hit back, but it does mean it should be on her for giving the okay.

Now in this case dude broker her face. That's not just a standard defensive swing. He had to have given one hell of a shot. Overkill to be sure.

Both should be thrown out of the school. They both committed acts of violence. Her act was as bad if not worse because she initiated it. His was still bad because he went over the top.

I'm more curious to see the results of the charges against him given that she started it. This is a far more interesting part of the story than her slap on the wrist.

A few things we need to consider.

*I have yet to see a source saying she punched or attacked him. Nowhere does it say she had a closed fist. Nowhere does it say she kept swinging. Nowhere does it say he was in danger. It says she started the altercation by making the first contact.

*Nowhere does it say he was harmed. Nowhere does it say he feared for his safety. Nowhere does it say he responded in self-defense.

*There are articles (I posted one a few posts ago) that say Bethel caused serious bodily injury with hands, feet, fists, etc. It was bad enough where she is going to need surgery.
