From Newberg:

In his “Top Free Agent Health Report,” Will Carroll (Under the Knife) suggests, on the subject of RHP Walker Buehler: “I expect Atlanta to be a strong player, along with Texas, who could basically swap their share of Scherzer’s money (Texas was on the hook for $12.5 million of Scherzer’s $43.33 million in 2024) for Buehler and come out even.”

From Newberg:

In an article ranking baseball’s top 35 trade targets this winter, Steve Adams (MLB Trade Rumors) includes OF Leody Taveras at No. 23 (“Another club with a center field need would surely look to buy low if the Rangers want to reallocate his playing time to younger options and his projected salary to their glaring pitching needs”) and 1B Nathaniel Lowe at No. 24 (“Lowe’s price tag is mounting at a time when the Rangers have a crowded payroll, a need for starting pitching, and multiple prospects who could plausibly slide in at first base [e.g., Justin Foscue, Dustin Harris] . . . Texas reportedly had some discussions about Lowe prior to the deadline, so it’s something they’ve pondered recently”).

From Newberg:

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel and Jesse Rogers handicapped seven teams’ chances of signing OF Juan Soto, pegging the Rangers third, behind the Yankees and Mets and ahead of the Nationals, Giants, Blue Jays, and Dodgers. The rationale on the Rangers: “Texas wasn’t happy with a 2025 repeat attempt that fell far short of aspirations, and after the offense took a big step back, the Rangers were left wondering which young players are for real. Soto would give them another slugger around Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, and he is actually still younger than some of the hitters Texas is waiting to see develop. One big weakness for Texas was an offense that ranked 26th in OPS against right-handed pitching: Pairing Soto and Seager would undoubtedly alter those numbers for the better. We’ve seen the Rangers dole out big long-term deals to hitters before — the only problem this offseason could be another year of monetary restrictions due to the lack of local television revenue.”

Frim Francys Romero:

Roki Sasaki has declined an offer from the Chiba Lotte Marines, per sources.

The situation of the 23-year-old ace remains uncertain. One possibility is being posted to sign with an MLB team, while another is continuing negotiations with the Marines.

From Tepid:

Ross Fenstermaker and Josh Boyd fixin' to drop a present under your Christmas tree.

A way too early power rankings for 2025 put the Rangers at 18th.

2024 Record: 78-84
Final 2024 Power Ranking: 22

Notable free agents and options: RHP Nathan Eovaldi (player), RHP José Leclerc, RHP David Robertson, RHP Max Scherzer, RHP Kirby Yates, RHP José Ureña

Your forecast for the 2025 Rangers hews closely to your level of belief in Jacob deGrom at this stage in his career. His stuff still sizzles. If deGrom can deliver a healthy season, I see no reason why a rotation of deGrom, Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford and Kumar Rocker can’t win a fair number of games in 2025. But deGrom hasn’t made 30 starts in a season since 2019. And the entire bullpen just left. So, some panic is warranted.

The Rangers have several stars and young talent across the diamond, plus a lot of salary coming off the books. With an aggressive offseason and better health outcomes next year, they could be back in the hunt in the AL West. — Nesbitt

Another reliever, Phil Maton, is on the market after the Mets decline their option on him.
