I would be pretty ecstatic if the Mariners signed Tanaka, for two reasons:

1. Gives us another top of the rotation pitcher.
2. We don't have to trade for David Price.

You never have enough quality pitching, but kind of bums me that we didn't go after Fister this off season. He would have been cheap and just as good. Jack blew it twice on him.

Agree on both points completely

Every year you wait on Stanton is another year less you will have him before he hits arb. Plus, after signing Cano and Felix, you can't play wait til next year game. You are spending $45M a year on two guys who aren't getting younger and are leaving their respective primes real soon. Clock started with the Cano deal.

it's naive to think that this team will go from horseshit in 2013 to contender in 2014.

with the team's current incompetent gm, historically incompetent front office, untried brand new coaching staff, and gaggle of new FA acquisitions, a trade like you proposed for stanton is 100% reckless.

in a year, when we know what's real with coaching, talent (especially young pitchers, with more on the horizon), etc, we can be much more calculated, and look to make legitimate moves to contend in 2015 and beyond.

a competent GM and FO will be looking to have this team really locked in and ready to contend for a run of years between 2015/16-2020. going all in as you suggest for stanton, right now, is putting the cart before the horse.

According to Nikkan Sports in Japan, five teams made formal offers -- nearly all of them worth more than $100 million over six years -- to Masahiro Tanaka on January 16.

Aaron Steen of MLB Trade Rumors provided the translation of the Japanese story. The five teams are said to be the Yankees, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, White Sox and Cubs. One team that was said to not be a serious contender for Tanaka's services was the Angels. The January 24 signing deadline is quickly approaching, and with his serious suitors now identified it's just a matter of waiting to see which one winds up winning the sweepstakes for the 25-year-old.

The Mariners may have been priced out of contention for Tanaka or the 25-year-old's interest in Seattle wasn’t as high as some thought, reports the Seattle Times' Geoff Baker.

I get the impression the FO did not get ownership approval to add another large contract.

Regardless of what "budget" the money would have been taken out of, signing Tanaka would have added $40m extra in expenditures for the Mariners this year. $20m for the posting price and around $20m for his annual salary.

Would be difficult for them to run a profit with an extra $40m in expenditures.

Per ESPN, Tanaka signed with the Yankees for 7 years/155 million

As much as I wanted the M's to get Tanaka, 155 million...just...no.

He would have been nice, but a top 3 free agent SP or two would work just as well. I still would like 2 bullpen arms as well.

too much money I think seattle would be better off saving that and spending it on 1 or 2 others. We will see if he is worth it.
