Rivalries are a two way street, OKST already has a major rival in OU, OU already has major rivals in OSU and Texas, AND if we become "rivals" with Kansas or IAST as some have suggested, then WVU football is in a sad state. Maryland is the only thing that even resembles a rival on the schedule right now.

If rivalries are a two way street, then how do you claim that WVU-PSU was a rivalry? Because of proximity? You honestly think that WVU-PSU was even remotely considered a rivalry by PSU fans! If you do, you're only kidding yourself. That game was chalked up as a "W" long before the game was ever played.

Did I say WVU and PSU were rivals? No, I did not, I said they were rivals with sPitt back when all three played. Try again, Mad

Eat Sh$t Longhorns just does not have the same ring to it as Eat Sh$t Pitt! :suds:

Conf rivalries will develope with time no matter what the distance....your playing each other every year bound to happen.

I do not see the arguement for Pitt not being our rival, it seemed years we were down or up this was a game Morgantown and the fan base were excited about. I agree other conf rivals will develope, but nothing in my opinion will replace the "Backyard Brawl"!!!

EAT SH$T PITT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well if Myron Cope said it..then it must be gospel!...I stand corrected!...

I hated listening to him when I was in school for the same reason I cite him now, he was the ultimate sPitt fan.

Who is "WE"??...or should that read "I"

And as far as the PITT rivalry...let's be honest ..it was manufactered first by WV..then by PITT "ONLY" because Penn State jumped to the BIG TEN...as far as PITT fan was concerned PENN STATE was their RILVAL game...we were an after thought!

Probably depends on your age, being a 2010 graduate of Pitt WVU was the only real rival I ever knew. I don't know if you can throw away 100 years worth of games as nothing.

Lets be honest, PSU doesn't need Pitt, they get 100k every game no matter what. Pitt and WVU were both mutually benefiting from a good rivalry.

Obviously the Big East was dying, and teams were scrambling, but I do miss the rivalry.

I am not dismissing totally that it was a rivalry game...but when I was growing up...the biggest game in the EAST was PITT vs PSU...both teams annually would have top end next level talent..

Yeah that's fair. I hope sometime in the future the teams start playing again, as I really hate the Pitt non conference schedule in both football and basketball for the most part.

But from the looks of it you guys have a pretty full slate in football at least.

Pitt and Penn State were clearly our biggest rivals in the past. Look at Miami though. By attendance at least, it was always a bigger game than Pitt. Why, they were dominant in the conference, always highly ranked, and at the time I hated them as much or more as sPitt. I hate Kellen Winslow much more than Dan Marino as I am sure many on this board agree. Miami was a new addition to the BE, but they became a big rival who in my mind, overtook Pitt and PSU. If we win, we will get the rivals. Texas and OU are everyones rival in the B12 because they dominate the conference. Guess what, we are starting to develop that rivalry with Texas. Nobody else in the conference is undefeated at Texas stadium. Overtime last year. Great games will make for great rivalries.

Your comparing a game matching two top ten teams together when comparing if Miami was a bigger draw...look at game number 4 on your list...two unranked teams still drawing 68000 that is a rivalry IMO. Miami I considered a rivalry as well and we had some history with them, but for me personally it was not on the same level as Pitt.

I'm not discounting that Pitt was and will always be a great rival with WVU and I would love to play them every year rather than a Towson State. My point is that if we do well and win the conference a couple of times and be a thorn in the side of the other conference teams, they will respect us, fear us, adn the rivalries will develop.

Sure OSU has OU as their big rival, but how would they feel they would have beaten OU this year; they would have been a loss to WVU away from potentially playing for the NC. Do that a couple of times, we will be hated and hate creates rivalries. Just give it some time.

I could never see us having a rivalry with Iowas State or Kansas unless it is basketball. Then again if we go 11-1 next year with our only loss to Kansas, it may begin.

I think both teams are in transition...and here is the unfortunate irony..no matter if they start playing each other again...and the same can be said for a Texas vs Texas A&M game...since they do not play in the same conference any longer it can never have the same meaning or value...it will always be a non-conference ..doesn't make a diffierence...football game..

I think that's a good point. The fact that it was a conference game made it of great importance. I'm afraid the further we get away from playing, the more people will lose sight of the rivalry, but maybe that means it wasn't much of a rivalry to begin with. But yeah, the Texas/AM game is an interesting parallel.

I know personally, I have moved onto disliking Penn St more than WVU, mainly because I know a ton of people that went to Penn St, but very few that went to WVU.

Not sure that the Texas stats tell us anything about rivalries as much as folks packed the stadium to see Texas for some other reason. No Oklahoma or Texas A&M. Some games were early in the season against less than stellar teams. Maybe just fans were free so "Let's go to the Stadium".

I have to give you props. You came to our board, and didn't start out trolling... or dumping on WVU... the school... its athletic teams... or its fans.

It may be a first-time experience for me.

Obviously, the Pitt/WVU rivalry is dead...

Haha, I'm practicing my patience for when Pitt plays Penn St in a few years, and I have to be courteous to my GF's father. It's not gonna be easy.

I think that teams who are rivals will remain rivals, regardless of conference, see UF-FSU, USCe-Clemson, UGA-GT, hell IA-IAST. If TX-TAM started up again next year, it would be right where it left off, same for the brawl.

IMO, none of those rivalry games are as intense as their rivalry opponents within their conference.

UF vs UGA… much more intense than UF vs FSU… or UGA vs GT.
