no all it takes is great management

Lmao!

The Cavs getting 3 lucky bounces of the Lotto balls in 4 years and handing over the keys to the Castle to Lebron are considered good management?

Well, maybe the last one because they did get the best player on the planet to play in a place that many have said NOBODY wants to play.

I remember the same being said about the Kings until they got Webber.

Yeah, one good player can change things.

Again, some guys just want to play with other good players. If you build it, they will come.

Also, what's the point of being the 8th seed in the NBA playoffs. Especially in the West this year.

Cannon fodder?

I'm guessing pride and playoff money.

Actually, this is kind of a weird year.

Depending on who they draw, a lower seeded Team like the Heat * 7th * could put the fear of GAWD in a few Teams.

Ditto for the OKC Westbrooks if they were facing anyone but the Warriors or Spurs.

Solid theory, but the effects of the star player can be pretty fleeting. What has become of the Kings since Webber retired? Who wanted to play there before they got Webber?

Does anyone really think players will still want to play in Cleveland once Lebron isn't Lebron anymore? Or is gone?

Would Lebron be going anywhere near Cleveland if he wasn't from Akron?

Heck, there's a ton of speculation that Love will leave Cleveland even with Lebron there.

How many stars were lining up to play in Cleveland when Lebron was in Miami?

The answer to that is unequivocally NO.

That was kind of my point.

Look at the Mavs.

Great owner, great City, good Team.

NOBODY wanted to take their money.

Clippers....Great City, Horrific management, laughable history.

Chris Paul trade....everything is different.

What;s the difference in those two situations?

Paul was seen as being in his prime and Dirk was one step past it.

This Generation of players want to click-up and play buddy-ball, easiest way to the Championship seems to be the goal.

All it takes for a franchise to make a drastic turnaround is to land one elite player.

After that, the role players will come.

How many times did Love say " NO " to going to the Cavs?

He changed his mind quickly once they got Lebron.

Another example, to a lesser extent because he is not elite: Al Jefferson.

Nobody would even look the BarfCraps * cough* Bobcats direction because they were such a joke. Their signings have gone badly. But, at least they have young guys like Stephenson that are willing to take their cash.

But, you are correct.

Teams like the Cavs, Clippers will go back to being what they were once those guys are gone, unless they draft well.

I sort of disagree a bit on Dallas as a viable destination. I think it will be a consistent choice.

NBA players want:
1. Most Money which is always tops
2. Big Diverse Cosmopolitan NBA cities
3. Warm Weather
4. Chance to win right away
5. Favorable Income Taxes on state level
6. Franchise Prestige / History of title Success and intangibles

They look for as many of those things as possible.
In a perfect world you get all six. Damn you Rockets....

Cleveland (without Lebron) doesnt offer any of that stuff.
Even with Lebron, they got guys via trade not free agency.

The Cavs will go back to being the Cavs just as the Kings have gone back to being the Kings. As for your Clips? I'm not convinced that they will go back to being the Clips with Ballmer as the owner.

Sterling just wanted to be able to say the he owns an NBA team, but didn't really want to spend any money to maintain the team. Any time the Clips started to look like they had a chance to be good, he would let those players go as soon as it came time to pay them what they were worth.

I don't think Ballmer will run the team that way. Will they ever overtake the Lakers or become a more attractive option on a consistent basis? I doubt it until they win a couple of titles. But I think that once the Lakers are back, we will start to see a much more competitive rivalry than we are used to.

Dallas has had those many of those things for years and can't seem to get anyone to take their money. Why would that change?

I agree that it seems like the Mavs should have no problem landing top FA's. It's a great city, they have an owner who is willing to pay and is great to his players. Yet, they always seem to miss on landing top FA's. Never been able to figure that one out.

Fortunately, for some markets... attracting big time free agents isn't the only way to get/stay relevant.

I guess that depends on one's definition of relevant. Teams like the Suns and Mavs have done a great job of stringing together winning seasons and making the playoffs, but they have 1 championship between them.

The Cavs were somewhat relevant in the 90's and when they've had Lebron. Outside of that, it's been a whole of being irrelevant.
