I don't know if the trapezoid got into his head or it is just old age, but the last couple of years he constantly misplays the puck. My favorite is when he slings the puck past an open defenseman right into the other teams forward.

I get that sometimes it seems like this is a negative, BUT you have to look at the number of times it saves our defensemen from getting hammered, or totally eliminates the Philly fore-check. It ALWAYS is better than not doing it. Period. Getting the puck from the corner down low all the way up to the point is way less dangerous.

I believe it is part of the Devils game plan so Cryers have a harder time establishing the fore-check. You see the Devils D move off to the sides to give Marty options. Yes we got burned a couple of times but overall I think it has been very effective for them.

Here is the thing with Marty playing the puck. When things go well, which is most of the game, he makes things difficult for the opposing team because they try to dump it away from him, or shoot it in the zone harder, or skate it in without the dump in. The game plan has to change. A lot of times, its tougher to get possession in the zone when you got a puck playing goalie. He is and was definitely an asset with his goal stick.

But, when there is a a give away, or he misplays it, obviously the consequences are much worse because he is out of position and caught scrambling back.

He just has to be a little smarter when he goes out of the crease. My one gripe with it, is when the D has a clear shot at the puck and he decides to play it. It can create confusion and indecision which leads to mistakes and goals.

thats exactly right nasty. there were times when he has a d man coming back for the puck but he tries to move it himself. there isnt a need for that thats what i want him to stop

Don't think that the Flyers aren't looking at that Dman saying, ok Marty's not going to play it. Also, remember two years ago, the Flyers massacred us with their play down below the circles, Marty remembers that.

Agree 100%. And to be honest it might look like the puck going around the boards to the point is a bad play, but it's better than the Flyers creating a turnover down low EVERY SINGLE time. Unless he puts it on a Flyers stick in the middle of the circles he's doing the right thing.
