The Falcons released running back Steven Jackson on Thursday, the team announced.

Jackson was owed $3.75 million in 2015, but with running back Devonta Freeman on the roster, it appears Jackson is expendable. In 2014, Jackson rushed for 707 yards and six touchdowns on 190 carries.

By cutting Jackson, the Falcons saved $3.7 million against the salary cap, reports the NFL Network.

Though he's without a team at the moment, running back Steven Jackson has no plans to retire.

The Falcons officially released Jackson Thursday night, with immediate questions emerging about his future. On his own website, though, Jackson posted a statement saying he isn't hanging up the cleats just yet.

"A lot has been written lately about my future," Jackson wrote. "There are questions about my age, and what I have left in the tank. Of that, I will simply say this. For the first nine years of my career, I was used like a battering ram, punishing opposing defense over four quarters of a game. Maybe you stopped me the first five times I got the ball, but by the 15th or 20th time I got it, late in a game -- let's just say you were really feeling me at that point.

"Make no mistake: I can still punish a defense. I still have a warrior's heart. There are 1,000-yard seasons left in these legs. I know what I am still capable of, and I have every intention of proving it."

Jackson also admitted his two seasons with the Falcons were a disappointment as the organization did not reach the postseason in either season. He combined for only 1,250 yards in 2013 and 2014 after posting eight consecutive seasons with over 1,000 yards when he was with the Rams.

I'd love to have him as a part of the organization. I'm sure Tre Mason could learn a lot from him. If he retires he could be a camp coach.

He'd be a great inspiration for our young backs on the practice field. And if they all get hurt...throw some pads and a jersey on him :noidea:

I think he should hang it up as he had a lot of wear and tear on him even before he went to Atlanta. He was a great back for us on a lot of horribly put together teams. I'd still like for him to sign a one day contract to retire as a Ram. Would definitely enjoy seeing him and Faulk work with Mason, Stacy and Cunningham.

I used to think that reaching 13000 career rushing yards was a magical # for a NFL running back. However, with RB's by committee's and the punishment that these guys take. Not too many teams are gonna start a 32 yr old back yet alone have him be the work horse on the offense. SJ has ran for 11388 yards in his career and could possibly get to 12000 given one more opportunity, but that's a lot of yards and maybe its best for him to hang up the cleats. I'm sure there will be a spot for him in Canton when its all said and done. Just sign the 1 day with the rams and call it a wrap.

If I'm SJ39 I want a place to play though. I have to believe he could be a suitable backup. I have seen many Steelers fans mention how well he'd fit as a back to Bell. Something like that is probably attractive to SJ.

Devonte Freeman is a beast. I don't know if SJ39's heart has been in it for sometime.

I have said for several years someone needs to use SJ like the Steelers used Bettis his last couple of years. In the red zone. 5 yards and in the defense is forced to account for him no matter the play call. And if your starter goes down he is still good for one or two fulltime games. Winning in the forth hand it to Jackson.

Bettis still had some downhill running left in him in his elder years. SJ, runs straight-up and he has lost his power step. Bring him back to the Rams for a day and have him retire as a Ram. If he doesn't want to retire, Fisher likes vets, bring him into training camp on the cheap and let him see Father time staring him in the face.

Really? That has always been my knock on SJax. Outside of 2006, he has always had some trouble on short down and distance situations especially when needing to get into the end zone.

That's because he always danced around in the backfield, not sure if that was just his style, or he saw no hole to run through?

You may have hit the nail on the head. He also has a strange jump step he does before hitting the hole I have never understood. Maybe a momentum thing don't know.
