Lightning relieved Steve Thomas of his duties and then swiftly hired Todd Richards as an assistant coach the following day. First off I think Steve Thomas deserves a whole lot of credit as his main role was to work with and develop the young kids both in his time in Syracuse and in Tampa. The Lightning have a young successful core group of players in place and Steve Thomas was a big part of that.

The hiring of Todd Richards is a very good one, he has over 400 games experience as a NHL head coach and one area I believe he's going to really help is on the Powerplay as his teams have always been good on special teams. In his last year with Columbus they ranked 5th in the league on the Powerplay and although Cooper runs the Powerplay here it will be nice to have some additional input from Richards to try and improve a woeful Powerplay.

Rick Bowness is the other assistant coach on this staff and Rick has done an excellent job with the defense and penalty killing unit. With his experience and proven track record it was only a matter of time before he gets interest from other teams and according to rumours he's in the final 3 in terms of candidates for the Ducks head coaching job. If we lose Bowness that would be a tough pill to swallow and would be very hard to replace.
