Not even just defending Marty on this one, but I've always thought Save % and Shots Against were pretty bullshit stats. You could face 1000 shots from behind the opponents goal and stop them all, another goalie faces 10 clear cut breakaways and let's in 1, the stats would show goalie number 1 clearly is the better of the 2.

heh, i actually have thought the other way.. that GAA was the BS stat cause your defense could be stout and allow 10 shots.. you might have a 2.00 GAA (solid), but that means you have a .800 save percentage which is atrocious..

i guess both aren't that good of tellers?

I've always felt that any stat taken by itself is corruptable. Taking all the stats into account and evaluating them along with qualitative analysis helps determine who is best.
