NEW YORK (Feb. 1, 2013) – Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson, San Jose Sharks left wing Patrick Marleau and Buffalo Sabres left wing Thomas Vanek have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the month of January.

With Spezza out, Craig Anderson will probably have to be on this list every month for the Sens to make the postseason.

Vanek has been tearing it up and I for 1 am 1 happy Sabres fan. I'm not thrilled that Marleau is ahead of him, but it is what it is...

Marleau has 9 goals to Vanek's 6, plus Patty has 3 game winners to Thomas's 0. I'd say they got it right.

Vanek has more assists 9 to Marleau's 5 but goals have always carried more weight.

Marleau is doing a great job, no doubt, just that he has 1 more game played than Vanek so I was hoping that would factor as well, oh well I will definitely take the fact that a sabre is a top guy

As I mentioned Thursday night, Thomas Vanek's start has been overlooked due to the run Marleau is on. That doesn't mean Vanek has been any less impressive. When you consider he's not playing with Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski it might even be better.

He also hasn't been as reliant on the power play as Marleau has, with nine of his points coming at even-strength. (Only five of Marleau's 14 points have come at even-strength).

Vanek has a point in every game he's played in this season and already has two five-point games in the first two weeks. The only NHL player to have more than one all of last season was Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin. (He had four of them.)

He's leading the NHL in points with 15, and he's done it in just six games.
