College Football 2018 Preview: Power Ranking Top 25 Quarterbacks - Sports Chat Place

1. Trace McSorley, Penn State - Trace McSorley won’t have the same playmakers to count on that he did last season, but this is a guy who has over 7,000 passing yards and 59 touchdowns in three years at Penn State. McSorley hasn’t lost many games since his high school days and has that mentality that allows him to will his team to victories. McSorley is the most complete QB in the country.

2. Will Grier, West Virginia - In just 11 games last season, Will Grier had 3,490 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. Grier will be this years Baker Mayfield, which makes West Virginia a sleeper for the college football playoff and even national title. We’ll get to those two things as we inch closer toward the college football season.

3. Khalil Tate, Arizona - Khalil Tate averaged 9.22 rushing yards per carry last season, which was the best in college football. Tate is a headache to defend, and his stats will be off the charts with a full season under his belt. Tate is a legit Heisman candidate and somebody you should be looking to bet on.

4. Jake Fromm, Georgia - Jake Fromm had 2,615 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, and he seemed to gain confidence as the season dragged out. With a season under his belt, Fromm should be ready to take that next step and become Georgia’s best QB since Aaron Murray.

5. Jake Browning, Washington - Washington didn’t live up to expectations last season, but Jake Browning is still a QB who has 9,104 career passing yards, 78 touchdowns and just 24 interceptions. Give Browning time, and he’s picking your defense apart. Browning gives the Huskies a chance to chase a Pac-12 title this season.

6. McKenzie Milton, UCF - Many expect UCF to go back to being just another team in the AAC due to the coaching change, but McKenzie Milton threw for over 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns last season. Milton was seventh in the country in passing yards and his 67.1 completion percentage was good for fourth.

7. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama - Tua Tagovailoa is the reason Alabama came back to beat Clemson in the title game, and he had 11 touchdown passes on the season as a backup. Tagovailoa has the goods, but I need to see a larger sample size before I make him a top-five QB in the country.

8. Drew Lock, Missouri - Drew Lock looked like a bum as a freshman, but you can’t argue with over 7,000 passing yards and 67 touchdown passes the last two seasons. Lock needs to improve his completion percentage that’s way under 60 percent, but he’s a difference maker for the Missouri Tigers.

9. Jarrett Stidham, Auburn - Jarrett Stidham completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 3,158 yards and 18 touchdowns, producing one of the best first seasons in Auburn history. With a loaded wide receiving corps, expect Stidham to take an even larger step, keeping the Tigers in the SEC championship picture.

10. Nick Fitzgerald, Mississippi State - Nick Fitzgerald looked like a Heisman contender the first month of the season, but he fell off, throwing for just 15 touchdowns and 11 picks. However, Fitzgerald does have 30 rushing touchdowns his last two seasons and does have some zip on his throws. The kid is talented.

11. Justin Herbert, Oregon - Justin Herbert battled injuries last year, but when he played, the Oregon Ducks were a completely different football team. In 16 career games, Herbert is completing 65.3 percent of his passes for almost 4,000 yards and 34 touchdowns. If he’s healthy, Oregon is back in the Pac-12 title picture after some recent struggles.

12. Kelly Bryant, Clemson - Kelly Bryant isn’t the passer that Deshaun Watson was, but he manages the game well and makes just enough plays to give Clemson the victory. With 14 starts last year, Bryant should be an even more effective quarterback for the Tigers.

13. Brian Lewerke, Michigan State - Michigan State had its issues last year, but few had to do with Brian Lewerke, who threw for over 2,700 yards, 20 touchdowns and rushed for over 500 yards and five touchdowns. Give Lewerke more reliable playmakers, and MSU can get back to being one of the top teams in the Big Ten.

14. Ryan Finley, NC State - Ryan Finley has topped 3,000 passing yards each of his last two seasons and completed 65.1 percent of his passes, which was second in the ACC last year. Finley could go down as the best quarterback in school history if he can get the Wolfpack to double-digit victories for the first time since 2002.

15. Shea Patterson, Michigan - In seven games with Ole Miss last season, Shea Patterson threw for 2,259 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 63.8 percent of his passes. Michigan finally has its quarterback, which means there’s no more excuses for coach Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.

16. Brett Rypien, Boise State - In three seasons with Boise State, Brett Rypien has 9,873 passing yards, 60 touchdowns and hasn’t thrown double-digit picks in a single season. Rypien is Mr. Reliable and should be able to lead the Broncos to double-digit victories for the 11th time in the last 13 years.

17. Jake Bentley, South Carolina - With 20 games under his belt and Bryan McClendon now calling the shots, we’re going to see the best of Jake Bentley. He’s completing 63.4 percent of his passes for 4,214 yards and 27 touchdowns for his career. Cut back on the interceptions and Bentley is going to be just fine against these SEC defenses.

18. Nathan Rourke, Ohio - Nathan Rourke threw for 2,203 yards and 17 touchdowns, but he also rushed for 912 yards and 21 scores. Rourke’s 21 rushing touchdowns was tied with Washington running back Myles Gaskin for the third most in college football. Rourke is simply one of the better playmakers in college football.

19. Justice Hansen, Arkansas State - Justice Hansen was tied with Mason Rudolph for fourth in the country with 37 touchdown passes and is responsible for 64 total scores in two seasons with Arkansas State. Hansen is easily one of the more underrated quarterbacks in college football, regardless of conference.

20. Josh Jackson, Virginia Tech - There’s questions if Josh Jackson will play this season for Virginia Tech. But for now, he’s a top-25 quarterback in the country and a guy nobody wants to tackle in the open field. Last year, Jackson threw for almost 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns while running for six scores.

21. Kyler Murray, Oklahoma - Kyler Murray shined in a very limited role as a backup behind Baker Mayfield, and he’ll finally have a chance to play a full season after even spotty playing time at Texas A&M. Murray is an elite athlete who is also fairly accurate with the football.

22. Eric Dungey, Syracuse - Eric Dungey doesn’t have the eye popping numbers that other guys on this list have, but the kid is extremely tough and drops dimes as he stands strong in the pocket. Dungey makes Syracuse football worth watching, and gives the Orange a fighting chance each weekend regardless of the tough competition in the ACC.

23. Malik Rosier, Miami - Malik Rosier was solid last season when he had healthy playmakers around him. The struggles for Rosier came when everybody got hurt and he had to make chicken salad out of chicken poop. We should see a more reliable, more consistent Rosier this season, if given the chance.

24. Mason Fine, North Texas - Mason Fine was sixth in college football last season with 4,052 passing yards and his 31 touchdown passes was 11th best. Fine is the best quarterback in the state of Texas at the moment. Shots fired.

25. Brent Stockstill, MTSU - Brent Stockstill has just one full season in four years at Middle Tennessee State, but he has 77 career touchdown passes and almost 9,000 passing yards. A healthy Stockstill gives the Blue Raiders a chance at just their second double-digit winning season in school history.

College Football 2018 Preview: Power Ranking Top 25 Running Backs - Sports Chat Place

1. Bryce Love, Stanford - Bryce Love could have bolted for the NFL but decided to return for his senior season. Love is the heartbeat of the Stanford offense and was one of two players last year to top 2,000 rushing yards. Keep in mind he finished the latter part of the season banged up.

2. Jonathan Taylor, Wisconsin - Jonathan Taylor was just 23 yards short of being the third player last season to crack the 2,000 rushing yard mark, and he was just a freshman. With possibly even a larger workload on his plate this year, Taylor makes the Wisconsin Badgers a legit playoff threat yet again.

3. Myles Gaskin, Washington - Myles Gaskin has topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of the last three seasons and finished tied for third last year with 21 rushing touchdowns. In three years, Gaskin has moved the chains 182 times on the ground.

4. Devin Singletary, FAU - Devin Singletary may be the most underrated running back in the country because he plays for a small school in Boca Raton. Well, Singletary did lead college football with 32 rushing touchdowns, which was at least nine more than any other back. FAU has a star on its hands, and it’s not Lane Kiffin.

5. J.K. Dobbins, Ohio State - J.K. Dobbins was 18th in the country last season with 1,403 rushing yards and only had 194 rushing attempts. With a year under his belt and the loss of some depth in the backfield, Dobbins is poised for an even bigger sophomore season.

6. AJ Dillon, Boston College - AJ Dillon had no less than 149 rushing yards in each of his last five games, and that doesn’t include the 272 yards he had against Louisville. An old school workhorse, Dillion puts Boston College on his back, as he moved the chains 66 times last season.

7. Justice Hill, Oklahoma State - While the passing attack gets the love in OK State, Justice Hill finished 13th in the country with 1,467 rushing yards while adding on 15 touchdowns. It’s about time Hill gets some of the shine for the Cowboys success.

8. David Montgomery, Iowa State - David Montgomery was third in the Big 12 with 1,146 rushing yards and is one of the best backs in space due to his elusiveness. Montgomery will make sure Iowa State has another surprise season that shakes things up in this conference.

9. Cam Akers, Florida State - Cam Akers topped 1,000 yards and had seven touchdowns, but you get the feeling the kid is just scratching the surface of his ability. Under coach Willie Taggart, you can expect Akers to really shine and show why he was one of the most raved about recruits.

10. Rodney Anderson, Oklahoma - Rodney Anderson is clearly the next great Oklahoma running back, as nobody thought about Joe Mixon when he had 1,161 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Anderson also caught 17 passes and five of those receptions produced touchdowns. Anderson will now shoulder even more of the workload with Baker Mayfield gone.

11. Mike Weber, Ohio State - Mike Weber had double-digit touchdowns and showed flashes of his 2016 season despite battling injuries. When healthy, Weber is deadly in the open field and has 17 rushes of 20-plus yards. Weber is key to getting the Buckeyes back in the national title picture this season.

12. Damien Harris, Alabama - You can’t talk running backs without including Alabama, and Damien Harris is a two-time 1,000-yard rusher who also had 11 touchdowns last season. Keep in mind Harris has had 19 or less carries in all 34 games he’s played in his Alabama career.

13. Benny Snell, Kentucky - In two seasons at Kentucky, Benny Snell has 2,424 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns. With Kentucky starting to find some consistent success with 14 wins in those two seasons, you can expect Snell to become more of a household name his junior season.

14. Travis Etienne, Clemson - Travis Etienne had 766 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns despite touching the ball just 107 times. Etienne will have to split carries with the talented Tavien Feaster, but you’re going to get a 1,000-yard season out of him easily.

15. Zack Moss, Utah - In his first season as a starter, Zack Moss racked up 1,173 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he got stronger as the season went on, lighting up West Virginia and Colorado for a combined 346 yards and three touchdowns.

16. Darrell Henderson, Memphis - Memphis lost its star quarterback and wide receiver, but the Tigers still have Darrell Henderson in the backfield. Henderson averaged 8.8 yards per carry last year, which was good for third in the country. As for running backs, only Abdul Adams had a higher average.

17. D'Andre Swift, Georgia - D'Andre Swift had 618 rushing yards, averaging over seven yards per carry. With no Nick Chubb or Sony Michel around to steal his carries, I’m scared to see what this kid can do. Swift is the one running back to know before the season starts.

18. Aeris Williams, Mississippi State - Aeris Williams has improved each of the three years he’s been with Mississippi State, and he’s coming off a year in which he had 1,107 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Top that season, and the Bulldogs are a dark horse in the SEC West.

19. Jalin Moore, Appalachian State - Jalin Moore topped 1,000 rushing yards and double-digit touchdowns for the second year in a row despite missing a pair of games. Moore is easily one of the most underrated players in the country, regardless of position.

20. Spencer Brown, UAB - Spencer Brown was a bright spot for a UAB program that’s trying to come back from the dead, as he produced 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns. Brown is a difference maker in a conference that lacks true star power.

21. Jonathan Ward, Central Michigan - Jonathan Ward topped 1,000 rushing yards last season and had 13 total touchdowns. One of the better receiving running backs in the country, Ward will carry the Chippewas this season as far as they’re going to go.

22. Travis Homer, Miami - Travis Homer stepped up big when Mark Walton went down with an injury, finishing with 966 rushing yards and averaging almost six yards per touch. Homer has big play ability and should see a more consistent workload this time around.

23. Patrick Laird, California - Patrick Laird had 130 or more rushing yards in four of his last five games and caught 45 passes on the season. Laird had a combined 11 rushing attempts his first two seasons. Cal has an exciting player on its hands.

24. Trayveon Williams, Texas A&M - Trayveon Williams topped 1,000 rushing yards as a freshman and had almost 800 yards last year with just 173 carries. Under coach Jimbo Fisher, Williams should see an increased workload and possibly his best season yet.

25. LJ Scott, Michigan State - LJ Scott seems to be an afterthought with the season Michigan State just had, but this is a guy who averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 2016 and had 160 yards against Ohio State. Scott is a quality player and should be ready for a bounce back season.

College Football 2018 Preview: Power Ranking Top 25 Wide Receivers - Sports Chat Place

1. David Sills V, West Virginia - David Sills V was tied with Memphis’ Anthony Miller for the most receiving touchdowns in the country with 18. Sills also seems to play his best in the big contests and has seven career games where he has two or more touchdown receptions.

2. A.J. Brown, Ole Miss - A.J. Brown has a chance to be one of the top receivers in Ole Mis history, as he’s coming off a 75 catch season in which he produced 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brown was also tied for fourth in the country with 16 receptions of 25 or more yards.

3. N’Keal Harry, Arizona State - In two seasons at ASU, N’Keal Harry has 140 receptions for more than 1,800 yards and 13 touchdowns. Harry also has two rushing touchdowns. A big target at 6’4”, Harry is a legit NFL prospect and possibly the best player on the Sun Devils overall.

4. Anthony Johnson, Buffalo - Anthony Johnson finished sixth in college football with 1,356 receiving yards and third in the country with 14 receiving touchdowns. It was his first season against FBS competition. With another season of QB Tyree Jackson, Johnson is poised for another monster season as one of the best receivers in college football.

5. Marquise Brown, Oklahoma - Marquise Brown won’t have Baker Mayfield throwing him the ball this season, but he’s one of the fastest players in college football with a 4.33 40-time. Brown averaged 19.2 yards per catch last season and finished the year catching at least one touchdown in five of his last seven games.

6. Diontae Johnson, Toledo - Diontae Johnson is one of the smaller receivers on this list at just 5’11”, but that didn’t stop him from racking up 1,278 yards and 13 scores last season. Johnson makes this Toledo team fun and highly explosive on the offensive end.

7. Stanley Morgan Jr., Nebraska - If you watched Nebraska last season, it seemed like Stanley Morgan Jr. was always making the biggest plays at the biggest moments. Morgan finished the year with 61 catches for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he’s improved each season. Expect his first 1,000 receiving yard season for the first time in his career.

8. Deebo Samuel, South Carolina - Deebo Samuel has played 10 or less games in all three seasons at South Carolina, as he’s battled injuries and what not. Samuel still has 1,194 career receiving yards and five touchdowns. He’ll be key to getting the Gamecocks offense off and running for a change.

9. Emanuel Hall, Missouri - The last two seasons with Missouri, Emanuel Hall has combined for 52 receptions, 1,124 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Now that there’s a relationship established with QB Drew Lock, expect Hall to become more of a household name in the SEC this season.

10. Gary Jennings, West Virginia - Gary Jennings had 97 receptions for 1,096 receiving yards and is averaging 12.1 yards per catch for his career. Jennings and Sills form one of the best wide receiver duos in the country. The only problem with Jennings is that he has just four touchdowns on 114 catches.

11. Jonathan Giles, LSU - After sitting out last season due to transferring from Texas Tech, Jonathan Giles has a chance to be one of the best LSU receivers in quite some time. Giles already has 85 receptions under his belt and 16 of those have produced touchdowns. LSU isn’t known for its passing game, but Giles is a legit difference maker.

12. Kelvin Harmon, NC State - Kelvin Harmon has been productive since stepping on the NC State campus, and he’s coming off a 1,000 yard season on 69 receptions. The scary thing is Harmon is capable of more consistency, which would put him in elite company.

13. Collin Johnson, Texas - Collin Johnson got off to a monster start to the 2017 season, lighting up Maryland for 125 yards and USC for 191 yards. Johnson then kind of disappeared down the stretch. With more consistent QB play, the Texas Longhorns have themselves a game changer on the outside.

14. Jaylen Smith, Louisville - Jaylen Smith is averaging almost 17 yards per reception for his career and has combined for 13 touchdowns the last two seasons. Lamar Jackson is obviously no longer around to throw him the ball, but Smith will stretch the field and make things easier for his replacement.

15. Jalen Reagor, TCU - Jalen Reagor is one of the fastest receivers in the country and had nine of his 33 receptions last year produce 25 or more yards. As just a freshman, you can expect Reagor to be more of a factor in this TCU offense, making even more plays for the Horned Frogs.

16. Denzel Mims, Baylor - The Baylor Bears are coming off a forgettable season, but Denzel Mims is coming off 1,087 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Baylor has a recent history of producing big time wideouts, and Sims seems to be the next guy in line.

17. Ahmmon Richards, Miami - Ahmmon Richards has been a consistent playmaker the last two seasons for Miami, and he’s been cleared to play this season after battling hamstring and knee injuries. Richards is a mismatch down the field due to his size and is a sure handed receiver who moves the chains.

18. Andy Isabella, UMass - In three seasons at UMass, Andy Isabella has 129 receptions, 1,828 yards and 17 touchdowns. Isabella is also averaging 9.1 rushing yards on 29 attempts. The competition isn’t great, but Isabella is clearly one of the best playmakers you’ve probably never heard of.

19. Trevon Brown, East Carolina - Trevon Brown is a big play receiver who has 115 receptions and 19 of those have produced 25 or more yards. Brown has gotten better in each of his three seasons at ECU and is coming off a year in which he topped 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns.

20. Hakeem Butler, Iowa State - At 6’6”, Hakeem Butler is going to get a lot of attention from NFL scouts, and he’s coming off a season in which he had 41 receptions, 697 yards and seven touchdowns. With Allen Lazard no longer on the team, Butler is going to be the first option on this Cyclones offense.

21. CeeDee Lamb, Oklahoma - As a freshman last season, CeeDee Lamb had 46 receptions for 807 yards and seven touchdowns. Lamb also had the passing touchdown to Mayfield in the game against Georgia. With more upper body strength, Lamb is going to be a problem for Big 12 defenses this season.

22. Felton Davis III, Michigan State - Felton Davis III was one of the few bright spots for Michigan State last season, as he had 55 receptions for 776 yards and nine touchdowns. Davis moved the chains on 70.9 percent of his receptions and can accomplish so much more with another season of Brian Lewerke at quarterback.

23. Tyler Johnson, Minnesota - Minnesota was 125th in the country last season with just 233 passing attempts. Tyler Johnson still managed to catch 35 balls for 677 yards and seven touchdowns. Maybe he’s good enough for the Golden Gophers to open up their offense a bit this season.

24. James Proche, SMU - In two seasons with SMU, James Proche has 97 receptions, 1,525 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. You have to think Proche is in for a true breakout season now that he’s the No. 1 option with Trey Quinn and Courtland Sutton gone.

25. Penny Hart, Georgia State - Penny Hart has only played two full seasons with Georgia State, but he’s topped 1,000 receiving yards both of those years and hauled in eight touchdowns apiece. At just 5’8”, Hart is possibly the best playmaker in all of the Sun Belt.

Here's big time connection but the TE Albert O... is an even better connection. Not to mention Johnathon Johnson might actually lead receivers in this stacked offense. But Hall averaged 24.8 yards per catch last year.

Damien Harris is a 2-time 1000-yard rusher and ranked at 11... okay. Don't forget he's had to share time with 3 other RBs who roll in regularly and a running QB in Jalen Hurts.

I'm not gonna say he's the best coming back out of bias... but he's DEFINITELY top 5 in the country coming back.

Also, Tua is good but doesn't deserve a Top 25 QB rank. He hasn't even started a game yet. Until he gets a few games in as a starter, he shouldn't really be considered for anything. The potential is there, but he still made some critical mistakes in the national title game that were inexcusable.

He was a solid recruit but our roster is already stacked at WR for the next 2-3 years. We have 3 guys that were freshmen last season that all will start this season. He may have rotated in this year, but definitely wasn't going to start. He'll be better in a system like West Virginia has that utilizes many 4-5 WR sets. He was a freak in high school at 6'2" 200 lbs. He'll probably be a possession receiver for you guys, or a goal line split end. He's definitely a great pickup. I hope you guys win the Big 12 this season, it'd be nice to see the old mid 2000's WVU again.

We certainly can use I guy of his size an ability. An I hope we win the B12 too but it will be tough when the defense is nonexistent.

I wonder why Iowa's Nate Stanley is not getting any love. He really didn't have great WRs. Sometimes, he had no receivers to throw to.and still got 3rd in B1G in pass TDs.

Lewerke had 8 less TDs, 1 more Int, 200 more pass yards with 90 more passes (Stanley has higher YPA). And he is 13th and St Ashley doesn't make the list.

Brett Rypien at 16 is too high. If we don’t make a NY 6 game it will be because of him or some combination of his play and the WRs failing to show.

Jake Fromm is going to get pushed by Justin Fields and there will be fan pressure if Georgia struggles.

Tua deserves a top 25 spot.

The Arizona kid is a great talent and might be one of the most interesting kids to watch this season.

If Stidham doesn't get line protection he is going to struggle big time.

Honestly who knows what is going to happen.

That's a pretty terrible list
