For DRS (Defensive Runs Saved), the Mets were a -93 last year (ranked 28th) and the Phillies were a +53 (8th). Based on his 3.48 FIP, I expect his ERA to improve.

Baserunners didn't really steal too many bases with Wheeler (6 SB/1 CS), but having JT will help there too as the Mets were dreadful in throwing runners out in 2019.

Imagine if the phillies also added a good defensive CF.

Say...one from South Carolina and a national championship pedigree in college...who also happens to be an ALCS MVP and a former World champion himself...

Money needs to be spent elsewhere. I like JBjr, but Haseley will do.
Led all of MLB in DRS in September 2019.

Lol

This is worse than the Harper deal. One season out of five he's made it thru the year. And was barely average doing it.
A little risky and they might have overpaid and concerned about injuries too. But saying he's only made it thru the year one season out of five is just stupid.
His rookie year he was a mid season callup. His second year he started every game. 2017 he missed half the season. Then the last two years he missed a couple starts, but I wouldn't say he didn't "make it thru the year". Last season 9th in innings pitched, tied for 16th in games started. 2018 13 in innings pitched, only 29 games started but that's 31 in a league that has about 31 teams.

Haseley is ok, but I'm predicting Jay Bruce to hit 12 bombs in spring training and take over the third starting outfield job. 42 homers, 120 ribbies in the regular season, lots of steroid allegations but nothing proven.

I like what Bruce has to offer, but Cutch should be healthy and ready for spring training.
Maybe a platoon?
Maybe Cutch can play CF from time to time?
They could also add 2 IF and move Kingery to CF.

I was penciling in McCutchen as the starting CF, but I guess maybe he's too old for that. But you know there will be some injuries so maybe just keep Bruce as a bench player until an outfielder or 1b goes down and then plug him in somewhere.

when they talk about the phillies not wanting to go over the luxury tax or whatever, does Bruces entire salary count towards that or just the small percentage of it they're on the hook for?

Yeah, I think it's just too much of an ask for a veteran player coming off a torn ACL to play solid defense in CF.
I just want him healthy and playing LF to the best of his ability with a stellar OBP as a leadoff hitter.

Yeah, that offense actually looked good when he was in there last year. It completely changed when they lost him for the season. Leading off with a guy that can get on base and also bang out 25-30 homeruns is huge.

Edit: Oops, I glossed over the fact that he missed 2 entire seasons in the middle of that. But of the 5 seasons he actually played, he pitched a lot of innings in 4 of them.

I mean, who are we to question the phillies great track record of signing pitchers that stay relatively healthy and never wind up on the IL.

Exactly, what could go wrong? But I do like the fact that he goes deep in games. Like last year he did go on the 10 day dl but I think it was around an off day anyway so he really only missed one start and when he came back he pitched well. He averaged 6 1/3 inning per start, which is what they need.

On a totally unrelated note, he isn't one of those guys that has a pilot's license is he?

Unfortunately, I do trust your instincts on dealing with and recognizing albatross contracts

Atleast he still plays.

Prince Fielder hasn't wore the Olde English D since 2013, Detroit will be paying him 6 mil next season.

In the last five years he's made it thru one season.

Im not counting what he did before those back to back seasons he didn't play at all.

Yeah I figured that out a couple hours later. You gotta understand, I grew up in a home where all the window blinds had lead paint so I'm a little slow sometimes. But the seasons he actually pitched, he did go deep in games and pitch a lot of innings, so there's that.

overpay, but he should still improve that rotation. still think they need another arm to contend with the braves though

Not even thinking about how they stack up against the Braves or other teams in the division I think they need a lot more pitching. Starters and relievers.
