why not just allow linesman to call penalties? say they can only call penalties when there is something that clearly goes on behind the play where the refs, in all honesty, shouldn't be looking anyway (not pertaining to the hossa incident in particular, i havent seen a good clip of that aside from the gif in the other thread)

or, to go a little more in depth.. have them be allowed to blow the play dead (when the offending team touches the puck) if they think the ref missed a penalty.. then review that.

I think that would be great but I assume linesmen would still make very few calls (if any) because they would be afraid to make calls that the refs missed, which they shouldn't have missed... The whole "brotherhood of refs" thing too... the linesmen probably don't *want* to be allowed to make calls the refs missed, I would assume? /shrug

I think that linesmen can currently go to the ref during a stoppage and point out something that they think the ref missed, and it can result in a penalty.

I guess it goes back to rares' point though that they probably don't want to upstage the refs.

Brendan Shanahan has days to review plays and interviews everyone involved, and he STILL gets it wrong.

How are two guys on the ice listening to someone in a booth in Toronto going to get it right?

And if it is to be used to call attention to a missed call, then Lindy Ruff will never shut the fuck up. And how exactly does it work? At stoppages, or are you going to give the coach the chance to stop at will? "Hey, I know three minutes have passed and the other team scored, but that guy totally held my player back then." "Oh, you're right. Erase the goal and add three minutes back!"

Besides, how do you penalize a coach for calling for review and not getting it overturned? You call for a review, you're denied and you get assessed a delay of game penalty?

You can't have this type of thing in a continuous play sport like hockey. This kind of thing could work in football because the action lasts about 6 seconds at a time.

Imagine a call is missed. Play continues. A goal is scored by the team who should have received a PP 3 minutes later. Or a player is injured only to learn that the last 5 minutes don't even count.

Too big a can of worms to open, IMO.

What's that? They're part of some union who won't want them wearing them because then they can't lie and say that all four of them missed an important play? Oh, that's too bad.. :L

If anything, I think it would help people in the crowd/audience (who have a great view of everything) understand how difficult it is to be a ref.

Pimpin' ain't easy. Reffing ain't either.

Let's just get a whole bunch of stuff on there though. A camera, the goal light, etc.

Brutal hit in Swedish Elite League Final, complete with ref helmet-cam view (VIDEO) | Puck Daddy - Yahoo! Sports

Referees in the Swedish Elite League all wear helmet cams?

That's pretty awesome. Let's get those set up in the NHL.

That's bloody awesome!!!

It was a great hit too.

As for it being a mechanism for monitoring refs performance, it's effectiveness would be limited, IMO. The helmet cam can show which way the refs head was pointed but not his eyes. It also can show his depth of focus.

I think when the coach wants to challenge a play, he should throw a puck on the ice during play to let the refs know?

Make it one of those glow pucks that leave a trail of light as it's moving and I think you're on to something :thumb:

It would, however, let us know how many calls were blown because the ref was looking at some girl in the stands...
