Carl Brewer? I remember him coming back to play for the Leafs for a few games that season.
Brewer's not in the Hockey Hall of Fame

Great Posts!
When Gordie Howe returned to the NHL as a member of the Hartford Whalers for the 1979-80 season,he became the first player to preform on the ice in league play AFTER he had been elected to the Hockey Hall Of Fame.He was not, however, the only Hall Of Famer to appear on the ice in an NHL game that season.Who was the other?
Gonna guess my favorite player as a wee lad, David Keon
I read it that way as well, someone who was already in the Hall of Fame in 79.
doing a little research, i see Bobby Hull was inducted in 1983, so my guess was wrong
Bobby Orr was in in 1979 though (3 year waiting period was waived).
did he bring his wonky knees out to drop the puck or take a lap or something?
I think you're misinterpreting the question (or maybe I am). There are many players currently in the Hall of Fame who were active in the NHL in 1979-80 but I believe the question is asking for someone who was already in the Hall of Fame when he "appeared on the ice in a game" during the 1979-80 season. Keon was not inducted until 1986.
On November 17,1982,the Adirondack Red Wings defeated the Maine Mariners,6-4.While the result of the game was not historic, the hat trick that Mariner winger Mel Hewitt scored that night was. Why?

BGDave nailed it.
Hewitt's 3-goal night was scored against three different goalies.Veteran Gilles Gilbert started the game, and let in the first goal by Hewitt, just 24 seconds into the game.At the 13:39 Gilbert got hurt and was replaced by Claude Legris.Forcing Jimmy Rutherford who was on assignment ,to come outta the stands and dress as a back up in case of emergency. At 14:13 of the second period,Hewitt scored his second goal.At the 10:43 mark of the third period a brawl broke out. Legris became involved, and was ejected by referee Dan Cournoyer.Rutherford now had to take over in net.Eight minutes later at the 18:36 mark,Hewitt scored his third goal of the game, making three goals against three different goalies.
Dave is up with a question, nice job!
Wow. My first thought was: one goal even strength, one on power play and one short handed. Hmmm.
OK here is an easy one. Whose name is engraved most often on the Stanley Cup?
