Compared to the other accepted great Defenses of the past?

They certainly were the best defense in the NFL this year and absolutely dominant in the playoffs, but GOAT is a lofty label to be tagged with..

Top 10 in the Super Bowl era for sure. Arguably, top 5. Even I was a little shocked at their performances in the playoffs this year. Keeping this unit together for next season will be a huge challenge for John Elway and his staff but if they can, the Broncos should be very competitive for years to come. It's so nice to have a defense that you can count on to win you games!!

I don't think it will be remembered as one of the greatest of all-time, but it was an excellent defense that saved some of it's best play for when it counted the most.

If they can continue as they did this year, they remind me a lot of the great Giants teams (Not the Eli ones). Where the defense dominated the game and the offense did what it had to do with running the ball and timely passing.

If you are talking about one season only then they need to be considered one of the best based on this year's run, especially their playoff run. But they'll need to keep it up over a span of a couple more years to get in the GOAT discussion for team defenses.

One the the best but there will likely never again be an '85 Bears D.

Taking nothing away though, they were awesome yesterday and they deserve credit for the win.

Oh I'm not taking away from them, they were pretty damm good. Obviously there are number of great D's out there better but top 5? Top 10?

To name some better ones imo

85 Bears
2000 Ravens
70's Steelers
80's Giants

Yeah...I wouldn't put it ahead of the 76 Steelers, 85 Bears, 00 Ravens or 13 Seahawks. I may put it ahead of the 02 Bucs to round out the top 5 though.

Of course...it's all subjective.

Think how good the defense would have looked if there was actually an offense. This defense with the 2013 Bronco offense would have looked very, very good.

Unfortunately, this defense had the 2015 offense thatset a Super Bowl record for the longest streak of failed 3rd down conversions, breaking the old Denver Bronco record from the 1977 season.

Is it just me or is it pretty obvious to everyone that many Pats fan on here want to go out of their way to make sure everyone thinks the only reason Denver won is because of their defense...

Well...I'm not sure how far out of their way they have to go to make that point.

Peyton deserved to be carried in this one though. He spent most of this career carrying everyone else.

The one thing that people do have to put in perspective:

What great defense ever had such a pathetic offense? It is probably the one thing that will keep this D out of the top 5 of all time. Even the '00 Ravens had a more productive offense because at least they could run the ball.

This D ranked 4th in points scored. If they had a decent running offense and a halfway competent QB this season, they almost assuredly would have been even more dominant.

But it is what is. That being 4th over the course of the season will keep it out of the conversation of GOAT.

Well when it comes to the Superbowl, it was. Peyton had some nice TD passes against NE to help them get to the SB, but he was not good at all in the big game. They didn't score an offensive TD until the final minutes.

Well he most certainly took it to the extreme.

No more saying "Well Trent Dilfer won a SB". Manning is now the king for doing the least possible in a playoff run that ends in a ring.

I think you have to put the 2010's Seahawks' D's up there now too. They've been absolutely dominant for 3 years in a row now.

Were they #1 in any categories in 2012? I don't recall.

Yeah. First team since 50s Browns to lead the league in scoring D 4 straight years.

I stand corrected then. So basically the Seahawks are this era's Steel Curtain. It's been fucking awesome to watch.

Considering how easily they won the Super Bowl in spite of the total ineptitude of their offense, that has to go down as one of the Top 5 Super Bowl performances.

I think the Ravens win over the Giants has to rank #1. Giants got no points at all from their offense, not even a field goal. Their only touchdown came on a kick return.

But this has to be a Top 5.
