Barris is out 4-6 weeks after the hit.:L

I will never understand why players like Cooke and Neal resort to this type of play.

Neal continues to do it because he's never really been punished for it.

I would like to see a lifetime ban for Cooke. Shit's gotta stop. He has put too many careers at risk.

I know it won't happen. He's the kind of guy that gets NHL on Sportscenter. NHL can't afford to lose that kind of exposure.

Is Cooke still technically a repeat offender now, or was his last suspension long enough ago?

I hate that rule. Behave for a while and then go right back into it once clear.

February 21st 2004 - Spearing Matt Johnson
Cooke suspended 2 games
Johnson not injured

January 27th 2009 - Headshot on Scott Walker
Cooke suspended 2 games
Walker misses 1 month and never fully recovered from post-concussion symptoms
Note: Walker had a previous concussion in 2001

November 28th 2009 - Headshot on Artem Anisimov
Cooke suspended 2 games
Anisimov not injured

February 9th 2011 - Hit from behind on Fedor Tyutin
Cooke suspended 4 games
Tyutin not injured

March 21st 2011 - Headshot on Ryan McDonagh
Cooke suspended for remainder of regular season (10 games) and first round of the playoffs (7 games)
Mcdonagh not injured

Other notable incidents:

March 7th 2010 - Headshot on Marc Savard
Cooke not suspended
Savard has only played 25 games since the incident

February 14th 2014 - Skate cuts Erik Karlsson
Cooke not suspended
Karlsson misses 31 games

That history deserves a massive punishment.

Putting Matt Cooke on the ice is like putting a guy with multiple DUIs behind the wheel.

Not to mention this little beauty only 6 weeks ago.

Player safety never even mentioned this one. :L

At what point does the union do something to protect it's members from this fucking criminal piece of shit?

tsnscottcullen: Matt Cooke (2008-11): 1.56 PIM/gm Matt Cooke (2012-2014): 0.63 PIM/gm There's no excusing hit on Barrie, but he has changed how he plays.

Sorry Cullen, but you just can't cherry pick stats and arrive at this type of conclusion. How about looking at the type of penalties he is still taking (boarding, charging, kneeing etc.)?

mc79hockey @mc79hockey I don't know how you can see guys make an obvious effort to reform, achieve some success and then say "These people don't change."

I don't know what to say when the video evidence is plastered all over youtube.

He didn't specify how much success. Just some success.

I didn't know 'reform' was synonymous with 'slightly less of a douche bag'. Regardless, just because someone hasn't been as c unty as they used to doesn't mean they get a free pass injure other players.

EDIT: Since when has the 'C' word been edited out on here?

Bob McKenzie (via Kerry Fraser) with some good information on the repeat offender status:

Fraser: A closer look at Cooke's knee-on-knee hit on Barrie

My colleague and friend Bob McKenzie shared the following information with me that should address your questions. A player's record is expunged if he goes 18 months without an infraction but that only applies to the formula for calculating lost wages. If a player has a fine or suspension in last 18 months, he's a repeat offender and the lost wages formula is based on number of games suspended (5/82 for a five game suspension) as opposed to number of days (5/182 for a five game suspension in a 182-day regular season).

But a player's "history" stays with him as a permanent record and the NHL can take into account any or all past transgressions when determining length of a suspension.

History doesn't allow the NHL to suspend a player who, if not for his history, wouldn't be suspended. But once an illegal play has taken place, the NHL can use Matt Cooke's history as part of his sentencing even if his transgressions were years ago.

I said in the series thread that it was too light (should have been 10+).

Would you guys have considered "rest of playoffs and 7 to start next year" appropriate?

Or would you have still wanted more?
