5th year option? I think the Broncos are going to want him for less than the 5th option would pay him.

I think this next season he does have the opportunity to prove himself to the Broncos if they give him snaps at DE - proving or disproving his versatility to the team.

The future is going to be Kilgo - and a half dozen guys lining up in surprise places.

The price is high, especially with our other free agents coming up. Sly has been a solid player and hopefully we can still find a way to keep him at a lower price.

Guess we'll see what Denver plans in the next two days.

5th year option is always tricky. I am torn on what to do with Sly.

Rookie year didn't make a big impact, 2nd year really came on, then we switched the D.

My prediction is that we pick it up though.

I read where the Broncos will have to pay him $6.8 million - and he is likely to be a two down player - so I'm in disagreement on the 5th year option. I do think if Sly proves he can play outside - he might deserve that kind of money.

I'm not big on the rule book, but I believe a team has to trigger the 5th year option before the 4th year starts -so there is a deadline for the Broncos to commit that amount of swag for the following season.

That is correct. The deadline is real soon. Xavier Rhodes just had his option picked up.

Time flys when you consider how fast these guys become free agents after drafting them. Man does time fly!

The deadline is today, and if the Broncos pick it up it will cost them $6.75 million. No way in the world should they pick it up. I like Sly and think he's a good player, but no 2 down DT is worth $6.75 million per year. Let his contract expire and try to negotiate a longer term deal (say, 3 years) with a much lower number per season.

Sly's option was declined today.

Mango was right, and after seeing his post about 6.75 million it makes all the sense in the world. No way would I pay that much for him.'

Makes a lot more sense to decline and work on a new contract if we want him back or let him walk if we feel he doesn't fit long term.

I figured it was a lot less then 6.75 mil.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Broncos actually go ahead and lock him up long-term though this off season. I do think they really like him just they know that they could probably get him for 2 years at the price of his option year. I mean Vince Wilfork a much more established NT in the league only got 4.5 million a year. BJ Raji another NT was on a one year deal for $2.75 million. So just not a high priority big contract position. If the Broncos picked up his 1-year option he actually becomes the richest on a per year basis NT in the league from what I can tell. So lock him up to say a 2-year $3 million per deal and I think he would be happy and the team would be happy they took care of one of the FA's for next year.

Yeah, this surely doesn't rule him being locked up after this season.

I honestly would be a bit shocked if they didn't lock him up unless he gets in his head he is worth much more than say $3 million a year. I really am hoping that Elway breaks away from what he has done some in the past and goes ahead and locks guys up a year early. Show Marshall and Sanders that you are committed to them long-term and just get it done. Doesn't have to cost you more cap wise this year and you know you want to keep them on the team so might as well ease their minds about next year and get the work done. Also makes it much easier going into next year not having as much work to do in the off season.

Correct. Denver could still work on a contract but not at a starting point of $6.75 MM. Maybe $4MM is he has a great season
