lets start the auditions now.
we have an off day on mon.
skip correia and go right to bedard, mcdonald, and burnett against min.
lets sweep 3.
then we start karstens, owens, locke, or reyes, whoever is on rhythm for friday and do the same on sat and then you got bedard, mcdonald, burnett, and the 2 newbies for at least a couple starts each to get us to the allstar break and then re-evaluate. see what they got.
i am not sold on any of the AAA guys as they didnt inspire a lot of confidence in their sept '11 auditions , but the whole team was on leave by mid august anyways, so could have been hard to evaluate.

who's in favor of transitioning correia and lincoln to their next role so we can really see what we have next year and know what to keep and what to trade come July 31 or the winter. do we need to see either of them start to know who they are and where they fit at the MLB level.
unless they come up with a new trick, they are what they are and thankfully, we are better than that thi year and in the future. they are just a bunch of duke, maholm, and gorzelanny types. we have moved past that mediocrity and potential and want people with consistency and better ceilings.

Lincoln has a role that he is pretty darn good at with the big club, and that's in the BP. At this point it's unfair to the team and to him to start him anymore. I agree that Correa's spot needs to go too, but need a solid replacement.

we arent winning anything this year with correia and lincoln starting.
we cant waste the year not knowing what the AAA guys can do in the MLB spot.
we are looking for a 4 and 5(depending on karstens health and we are predicting bedard stays injury free).
lincoln might be a valuable reliever, we dont know, shows promise, but not a starter, at least for the next several years.
we might have to take a few on the chin waiting for karstens to get back to health and one or two AAA guys to shine, but look at what we get from BL and KC every 5 days.
consistent junk.
not sure what qualifies as a "solid replacement" to replace 4 innings/4 runs, kind of starts.

I agree (and have posted previously) that Lincoln and Correia need to be replaced in the rotation.

Seems to me that means Karstens and someone from AAA. It has been widely reported that Karstens isn't due back until July 1. I'm guessing that means that Correia will stay in the rotation for another couple of weeks.

Leroux is ready to come off the DL before Karstens. Leroux is out of options, meaning that he needs to bump someone from the bullpen or be lost on waivers. I believe both Lincoln and Hughes have options left, and I think they should try to keep Leroux..... so it's likely that Hughes or Lincoln will be optioned to Indy to make room for Leroux.

There's so much going on that it's hard to predict all the likely pitching staff moves between now and the break..... but here's how I would start:

- Don't put Lincoln through another start. Bring up Owens to take Lincoln's spot in the rotation. Option Lincoln to Indy to make space for Owens.

- When Leroux comes off the DL, option Hughes to Indy to make a spot for him.

- Keep Correia in the rotation until Karstens comes off the DL, then have Karstens take Correia's rotation spot.

At that point, roster moves become less obvious. When Karstens comes off the DL, someone will need to move off the 25-man roster to clear a spot. One possibility: If Owens gets roughed up in his first couple of starts, he could be optioned back to Indy to make room for Karstens on the 25-man. I'd be inclined to keep Correia as long relief and spot starter, at least until we see if Owens has any success and Karstens proves to be healthy. IMO, Correia is NOT a long-term solution, but he's an experienced #5 starter, and I'd probably keep him through year-end (unless NH finds a trade for him).

Note to sychmd: Yes, Correia's contract expires at season's end (as does Bedard's).

thanks mags.
if we need to dump someone from the 25, i wouldnt mind getting rid of cruz and resop. i dont really see them as long term options as and are expendable if we see lincoln and leroux as good BP options and getting rid of cruz and resop will give 2 spots to absorb owens and locke for now and leroux and karstens when they are ready to get off DL.

we have plenty of starting options to audition so lets start letting the auditions happen.

I think I'd sooner dump Resop than option Hughes. I like his stuff.

I like Hughes' stuff, as well.

However, Resop has pretty good stuff, too, and has done some good work for the Bucs over the past 3 seasons. Besides, he's only 29 and inexpensive at less than $1 mill..... and I believe he'll only be arb-2 for next year. I wouldn't be too quick to dump a reasonably talented veteran like Resop for nothing. We could do a lot worse for bullpen help (and have done so frequently in the past).

My preference is to hang on to as much talent as possible, and I believe Resop still has some talent. Keeping Resop makes him available not only for the Bucs' bullpen but also to be part of a trade.

Meanwhile, optioning Hughes means that he'll be available for future needs (both injuries and poor performance by others) and certainly for next year, and may delay his arbitration and free agent clocks, as well.

good points, but resop usually only had numbers in very low leverage situations. didnt handle pressure situations very well. good stuff but not able to use it well when really needed it.
i am all for packaging him and cruz and another from AAA to a team that needs pitching for the stretch run for some hitter that is being blocked.
