The benefit would be field position and FGs... IF it pans out.
That's a big unknown IF. It's not like there was a vet out there with a track record. We just took a flyer on a guy that we have no idea how he will pan out. Mark my words. Kai will get picked up and go onto that long string of kickers we have jettisoned who ended up being solid.

Of course its a big IF but at least this kid has the tools to be a great one. I wanted Hocker last year and you guy said I was nuts b/c he was a rookie and we already had an established vet who has an 88% FG rate. So the Saints are taking a chance on Hocker(rookie) over veterans so we are basically doing the same thing. You guys are crying foul for no reason at all. Hocker went 4-4 on Sunday.

It is a big if. One of the reasons I wouldn't have minded using a roster spot to add Dustin without cutting Kai.

What's misleading is hE uses as his example an NFL vet kicker that still makes 80+% of his kicks. But that's not who we signed. We signed an unproven rookie who we have never seen kick in any NFL game. Sure maybe the difference between 80 and 86% isn't that great, but when the kid misses his first xtra point or shanks a couple of 35 yarders and only makes 70% of his kicks it will make a difference. Especially on this team where we have issues punching it into the end zone and settle for fgs more than most. All so we can attempt 3-4 50+ fgs and make one or two. Oh yeah, he can kick it into the end zone so we mask the real problem in that we suck on kick coverage.

If gruden wanted to send a point home by canning Kai, the point would have been better made by firing the ST coach. That would have truly said that no one is safe.

I wanted to give some dap to this post yesterday, but had some computer issues pop up so here I am giving up the dap.

And on a side note. I'm not so sure starting at the 24 yard line as opposed to the 20 yard line is gonna make a whole lotta difference for the Skins offense.

One point not mentioned is the fact that 2 kickers were scheduled to come in to Redskins Park on Monday. That happened behind the scene prior to Sunday's game. Dustin was offered a contract after his workout and visit.

I opined that maybe it was too much work on his leg, but it is a good question. And of note, Tress did in fact kick off for the Skins 18 times last year with 9 being touch backs.

Well its good that they at least kicked the tires, so to speak, on Dustin. I guess keeping or speaking up for Kai is a moot point now so with that said...........................here's to wishing Dustin all the best far as having a long and successful career as the Skins FG kicker/KO kicker.

.... i distinctly remember atleast 2 or 3 of Forbath misses having to do with inept blocking on the line allowing pressure getting through ...

do they keep stats on that ?

guy would most likely be above 90% accuracy

Back in the day Sammy Baugh used to pass & kick. Baugh used to punt on 3rd downs to catch the opposing defense off guard. Could you imagine if Griffin had added that to his repertoire in 2012, passing, running, & kicking when they least expected it, lol

.... but with roster spots at a premium it wouldnt surprise me if old things become new again.

The technical reason for why a punter & FG kicker are different is, obviously, a matter of technique ... but nothing a gifted athlete wouldnt be able to overcome

I also brought up Tress Way's kickoff numbers in another thread. But if he's only 50% not sure that's good enough. As I recall his kicks were low.

I don't think it's an accident that they are doing this right before T, Austin arrives in town.

:deadhorse:

if i can get one more punch in on this dead horse ...

if the coaching staff & GM wanted a kicker with more strength ... then why wasn't this decision made during the preseason ?

Nah I gotta throw one more punch. As I was discussing this on another board I looked into some of the kickers on top offensive teams. I found this:

Kai: 0utside of 50: 50% Career touch back percentage (new rules, back 5 yards): 28.1% Football | NFL | Player Stats - Kai Forbath - Washington Redskins - washingtonpost.com

Adam Venateiri: Outside of 50: 1 kick made over 50% at 23-42 Touch back 8% (I'm not kidding, 88 out of 1,049 and most with the old rules). Adam Vinatieri: Career Stats at NFL.com

Mason Crosby: Outside of 50: 49% Touch backs 25.9% again most with the old rules. Mason Crosby: Career Stats at NFL.com

Now GB and Indy are known for cashing in with TDs in the red zone. We obviously are not so it's even more important for out team to get points on every possible opportunity. And we gave away a guy who supposedly has a weak leg yet other successful teams don't seem to have a problem keeping guys with weaker distance stats because they understand the importance of making kicks.

Well, I'm sure the constant coaching turn over didn't do Kai any favors. If this new kid e

I know he had an XP blocked.

I just hope this wan't a lazy move and the coaching staff is thinking, well that solves our KO coverage issues. Because it doesn't and it doesn't do shit far as our punt coverage issues.

I wish Kai the best, but I won't lose any sleep if he doesn't turn out to be another David Akers.
