I do not know where the line gets drawn and I am not a fan of the league looking at whats said on the ice underneath a microscope (little sound waves) but I certainly do not have a problem with them removing or trying to remove ethnic slurs from the ice and I think this is a logical step from that.

I would certainly hope no one here would be OK with players being called ****ers on the ice and would understand that the league would punish that. If the league punishes that then the precedence is set. I know some people are fine with that slur being used as I have seen some people here refer to people by that name but I hope most people would have a problem with it being thrown around on the ice.

I am not sure this has anything to do with the country, but more to do with the NHL and how it wants itself presented and marketed. Obviously they feel if they ignore it they will look bad and since they want a wide fanbase its probably wise.

If I am being paid millions of dollars to play a game and represent my team, the league, and the sport I do not have a problem with restrictions to what I could say on the ice, or at least within distance of a mic.

I'll agree that racial slurs have no place in the game, but how often are they really used? I someone actually has the balls to call Simmonds or Subban the N word, then these players have to right to beat the living shit out of them.

My problem is with scenario's such as these where you call a straight man and "fag" or "bitch." These don't really hit home with 99.9% of the league so the only offense here is comparing a tough man to a woman or homosexual. If someone calls a homosexual a gay slur, I think that is wrong. If someone says a racial slur to someone who is actually that race, that is wrong.

My argument is that 99% of the time, they are just words with no meaning to the intended targets. No one gets offended but the fans sitting at home and the media blowing it out of proportion.

Words are just words. Stop trying to control people's freedom of speech. Someone says something you don't like then don't support them. Stop trying to censor everything.

But the point you are missing is that it is not the person on the receiving end of the slur (in this case Avery) whose feelings you need to be concerned with. Its people who actually are gay who are being disrespected every time that word is used as an insult. I agree with the "sticks and stones" and "words are just words" arguments. But if you're going to use those arguments you have to use them in all cases of bigotry. The precedent has already been set. Anytime there have been accusations of someone saying a racial or ethnic slur the league has taken it very seriously, or at least gave the impression that they were doing so. My guess is it's something the league would prefer to avoid but realize it needs to be address so (as they did here) they say the looked into it but can't prove it.

That's not a fair assumption. Given the "masculine" climate of the NHL, and given the fact that Avery is the only player in the league who supports LGBT Civil Rights openly, if there are any homosexual players in the league, they are probably unwilling to disclose it publicly. And given that slurs against the LGBT community are used as insults on the ice, I'm sure their discomfort with doing so is likely somewhat justified.

And it's for exactly that reason that things like this should be eliminated from the NHL. Allowing people to use these terms forces any players who might be homosexual to live lies for their own protection, and that isn't fair to them.

But they should have bigger concerns than the NHL. One guy mouths the word and everyone flips shit.

These words are used on a daily basis approximately 9.9766 billion times a day, mostly targeted at people who actually are not whatever name they are being called.

I just think punishing this is next to impossible and am afraid where it could lead to. Where does the line get drawn? How can you target 1 guy and not another? Just because the media cries about something does not mean you have to give in.

Why can't everyone just leave Avery alone?

He's one of the nicest guys in the league, he plays hard and he's a great teammate. I just don't get all the fuss.

I all players like him were chunks of shit, he'd be the one made of gold. It is easy to hate him.

As I've previously stated, I don't necessarily disagree. But my point is that it should be treated the same way as any other racial or ethnic slur said on the ice (regardless who it is directed towards), which could be nothing at all as far as I'm concerned. But the precedent has already been set.

The NHL is big enough to deal with more than one concern at a time. There are quite a few VPs in the fold, and between all of them, they're handling every issue. We may not agree with how they handle these things, but you can't say that they should just ignore prejudicial statements because there might be one or two other big things going on.

I mean, Christ, should the United States close up the Supreme Court just because one of the other two branches of government have a lot on their plate?

Colin Campbell is the senior VP of hockey operations; this is his job. He can't just not do it because Shanahan is dealing with headshots.

Discriminatory terms. People seriously need to stop asking "where the line gets drawn," because it's a pretty bright-line rule: Hate speech is unacceptable.

N-word? Don't use it.
F-word? Don't use it.
S-word? Don't use it.
Tit Fucker? Use it.

Everyone's so paranoid about potential negative downstream consequences that they're not seeing the problem sitting in front of their face.

Hate speech if it is actually hate speech - don't use it

Anything is fair game in my opinion. If someone has the balls to say something, let him get his ass kicked.

The NHL has a responsibility to hold themselves to a higher standard than the average Joe on the street, like it or not.

There are hundreds of thousands of youth players in the US and Canada that idolize their favorite NHL players.

IMO, the NHL has an obligation to step in and send the message that hatred won't be tolerated and set the example for other people. That's the way that these things come to change.

And I know working in an office and playing in the NHL aren't the same (pretty sure I'd get fired for fighting with my co-workers), but consider what would happen if you used that type of language towards one of your co-workers.

Well then, the next time Jarome Iginla is curb-stomping the Flyers, make sure someone calls him the N-word, that way he'll start a fight and get ejected and Shanabanned.

Oh, wait - there might be a problem with your plan...
