I'd love for Sherman to win it but I think it goes to Watt, Quinn, or Kuechly.

But, I have to disagree with a couple of you that corners aren't as valuable as pass rushers. What guys like Sherman, Revis, or Bailey and Sanders (back in the day) did was take away an entire half of the field from the QB. That's huge when a corner can do that and just let the other 10 guys cover what's left. Plus, an outstanding corner or safety will also (occasionally) rush the passer and get a sack or a hurry on a corner blitz. You'll never see a DE fall back in coverage and break up a pass 20 yards down the field.

Not saying they aren't valuable...I'm saying they are not viewed as highly as a great pass rusher. Doesn't mean they aren't just as valuable. Although I would argue the value of a great corner is somewhat diminishing as there are more and more great receivers entering the league and it makes more sense for teams to invest similar money over 3 corners compared to just 1 great corner. Teams seem to need at least 2 good coverage corners or at least a great corner and a great safety. Can't just have one great one anymore that shuts down the top receiver as quarterbacks will just eat the other corners alive. Throw in the value of the TE position sky rocketing and it can mean that the top corner on a team isn't even covering the top receiving option on a team any more.

Shutdown corners value has always been understated by fans. But not by teams as évidenced by the contract values of these rare players. Knowing where the ball is going, or not going, before it is even snapped is à major défensive advantage.

I understand that but with the emergence of so many great receivers teams are figuring out that it is sometimes better for a team to spend $5 million on 3 different corners compared to $15 million for one great corner.

Just look at the market this past season as great evidence. In 2012 the big contracts handed out were closer to the $8-10 million area per year. This past season they were closer to the $5 million per year. Heck even Revis' contract was more team friendly than player friendly in they can cut him any time they want without penalty. The Cap went up but the dollars went down for the Corner position. Like I said teams are figuring out that it benefits the team more to have 3 above average corners for the price of one great corner. You can only have so many big contracts on a team and still be successful. Now yes it is great to have the top tier corner but doesn't help a whole lot if the other 2 corners stink up the place. Throw in the emergence of the TE position that gives at least quite a few of the top teams in the league 4 at least above average targets for the quarterback to throw at.

d-linemen are more coveted in the league than cb's. that much is clear by how much they make. cornerbacks can often be made or broken depending on the scheme. a d-lineman's ability to dominate the guy standing in front of him is less driven by his scheme and more by pure ability. therefore, a 'stud' at that position is traditionally considered more important.

You simply always take the elite pass rusher over the elite corner which is why they have a tough time winning the award.

A good pass rusher can make the entire secondary better whereas an elite corner can be passed around and you need the entire secondary to be good for them to help the pass rush.

That's not to say an elite corner is useless it's just their impact isn't the same as an elite pass rusher.

So Sherman definitely belongs in the conversation it's just Watt is more deserving because his position allows him to be disruptive every play pass or run.

Honestly I hope he doesn't win it. He love to create chips on his shoulder and have things to prove others wrong. Not naming him DPOY will just give him more fuel for next season.

And give him a little less leverage in contract talks ;)

My only knock on him getting it would be that he is part of a collectively great defense. It reminds me of a few years back when James Harrison won it and Polamalu finished I believe 4th or 5th in the voting. I don't think you can have multiple guys that high. As great as he is, to me DPOY should be, this defense is lost if this guy isn't in the lineup. With that said if he won it, I wouldn't lose any sleep over that decision.

For the Steelers, Harrison won in 2008, Polamalu in 2010....in the 70s, Greene won in 72 and 74, Blount in 75, Lambert in 76

for the Ravens, Lewis won in 00 and 03, Reed won in 2004

So only good players on shitty defenses should win?
