I was hoping that maybe we could get Barr. Is he still available?

It looks like the Jets got him. Down to Houston or Wright. Both around 30 but for a LB that is not too old. I am leaning toward Wright. If we dont get one of them then it is a lock that we are drafting Devin White.

TBH the FA grab has been exactly what I thought it would be with us drafting White and then JJ Williams with the first 2 picks. Then we can draft for depth/future with our remaining picks.

aren't you going to bitch that he got a 14M APY contract or would that only come into play if the Lions had given him that kind of contract.

Trey Flowers contract details include $56 million in guarantees

Trey Flowers is really cashing in on his impressive run with the New England Patriots. The Detroit Lions are paying him $90 million over five years, an average of $18 million per year. That figure makes Flowers the second-highest paid EDGE (behind Chicago’s Khalil Mack) in the league when he signs.

In addition to the big total value, the new Lions EDGE will earn $56 million in guaranteed money against the salary cap over the course of the contract. A full $40 million is fully guaranteed at signing, a figure which includes his signing bonus.

The contract does not become official until Wednesday, when the NFL league year changes and teams can officially sign free agents.

Aaron Wilson‏ @AaronWilson_NFL
Trey Flowers' $90 million Lions deal: $56M gtd, $28.07M signing bonus, salaries $805K (gtd), $11.125M (gtd), $14.375M (gt inj at signing, $10M full gt if on roster third day of lg yr), fully gtd if on roster 3rd day '21 lg yr, $1.625M 3rd day '22 roster bonus, $2M 3rd day '23

Lions addition of Flowers shouldn't rule out EDGE at pick 8

The filled their biggest need just hours into the legal tampering period of free agency landing EDGE rusher Trey Flowers on a five-year deal. Flowers is a perfect fit for the Lions down defensive end role, and when paired up with Damon Harrison, A’Shawn Robinson and Da’Shawn Hand should immediately give Detroit one of the best defensive lines in the NFL.

As much as Flowers will help on the EDGE, the Lions inability to rush the passer isn’t something that is likely to be solved by the addition of only one player and that is why the Lions shouldn’t rule out adding another pass rusher this offseason — potentially with the 8th overall pick in the draft.

Lions addition of Flowers shouldn't rule out EDGE at pick 8

Flowers is a versatile chess piece for the Lions, offering them Hand-like range to play from at the 7-technique, all the way inside to the 0T in obvious passing situations and that sets up opportunities for others to see the field.

When Flowers pushes inside the Lions can opt to bring another EDGE rusher on the outside of him. Sometimes that rusher will be Romero Okwara — who just signed an extension — but the Lions could turn to the draft to acquire more EDGE rushing talent.

The easiest way to fill this need, without it being a situational player only, is to target players who can drop into coverage and fill linebacker responsibilities. That means adding a prospect capable of playing at the JACK linebacker position.

With Flowers and Okwara filling the down defensive end role, players like Nick Bosa, Rashan Gary and Clelin Ferrell will likely be out of the conversation at pick 8, but, there are four others that could still very much be in the mix.

The perfect fit at 8
The Lions pursuit of Anthony Barr is an indicator that the Lions are in the market to add a linebacker who has pass rushing skills. The best player capable of that in this draft class is Josh Allen (Kentucky, 6-5, 262).

Allen might be the number one target on the Lions board, as he is the perfect combination of scheme fit, athleticism and production in the entire draft. Adding Allen would give the give the Lions an every-down player who could start at WILL as well as being an EDGE option when Flowers pushes inside or when the Lions want to disguise their intentions.

Most think Allen will be off the board in the first few picks, but if Allen starts to slide, the Lions could be aggressive in acquiring him. Recently, Lions Wire’s own Jeff Risdon mocked him to the Lions, suggesting it may not be as far-fetched an idea as people think.

Don’t rule out at 8
On most teams draft boards, Ed Oliver (Houston, 6-2, 287) will be listed among the interior defensive linemen, but on the Lions board, I believe he will be listed as an EDGE player capable of filling multiple roles. It wasn’t long ago he was talked about as the best player in the draft and if he’s there at 8, the Lions may draft him as a chess piece.

Brian Burns (Florida State, 6-5, 249) and Montez Sweat (Mississippi State, 6-6, 260) both played defensive end in college so there is some projection needed here, but both tested off the charts at the Combine, indicating they have the athletic ability. Sweat looked stiff in dropping drills at the Combine — and as a pass rusher in game film — which is why I have him rated below Burns who looked natural standing up and moving like a linebacker.

Woohoo!!!!!

JJ and Flowers and Coleman. Just need at least one of the LBs. Barr hopefully but any of them would be good. @Rollingthndr may get his wish of a WR in the first round if that happens.

Also LOL at Shefter calling us the Detroit Patriots.

https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2019...-of-flowers-shouldnt-rule-out-edge-at-pick-8/

Day 2 sleeper
If Allen is gone before the Lions pick in the first round and they’re not comfortable with the projections of the other players suggested, D’Andre Walker (Georgia, 6-2.5, 251) is a natural JACK linebacker, comfortable rushing and dropping into coverage, although he isn’t elite at either just yet. With time to develop, Walker would give the Lions a dynamic pass rushing weapon from the second level.

BB_72; Walker shouldn't be considered a day 2 prospect. imo. at very beginning of day 3, yes. imo.

Day 3 deep sleeper
If the Lions miss on Allen and Walker, Ben Banogu (TCU, JACK, 6-3.5, 250) should be on their target list on the third day of the draft. He is still in the developmental stages but his athletic testing was through the roof at the Combine and is a moldable JACK option.

2020: $11,125,000 salary, $5,614,00 prorated signing bonus = $16.739 cap hit

UPDATE 3: Here’s a full breakdown of the deal, assuming there are no more unreported bonuses in the contract:

That would be sweet if he dropped. There is a glimmer of hope now that the Cardinals now have 2 edge guys. That moves Boza and Allen down now as the Cards will probably take Murray.

anything can happen in the draft.

Some bat shit crazy team like the Cardinals draft Murray. Gruden surprises by drafting a QB and quite possibly a team jumps the Raiders to select a QB at the now Jets position at #3. There's also the Giants possibly in the mix for a QB at #6

Lots of possibilities in the top 7 that have yet to come to fruition.

I am not bitching we got the guy. He is a good football player and I hope he does well for the Lions. He is only 25 years old.
I only pointed out earlier that perennial winners like Baltimore,Green Bay and New England tend to let guys hit the market and are still awesome. Teams like the Lions, Redskins and Titans spend big money in free agency and usually blow every year. Not sure if it is correlated or not.

Bottom line is this. The Pats didn't think he is worth 17 million or they would of franchised him. The Lions think he is worth 18 million(Top 3 money btw). Let's see who is right in a couple years.

Looks like he is guaranteed probably 3 years. Which puts him through his age 28 campaign. It might actually be a good deal at 23million cap hit if the cap continues to rise over the next few years.

I would rather have Bosa then Allen but would be ecstatic either way with one of them. I am almost positive the the 49ers and Raiders will scoop them both up though.
