while I get where you're coming from and pretty much agree, Jumbo Joe doesn't strike me as the "take this as a challenge and rise to it" type of guy (which is part of the reason he shouldn't wear the C), but rather as a "go sit in the corner and sulk" type...just not too sure of how positive an impact this will have on the Sharks.
If guys like Vlasic, Pavelski or caveman Burns decide they want it it could have an extremely positive effect.
I don't think this is a "Motivate Thornton" move, it feels like a "tell the rest of the team there is no status quo" kind of move. Jumbo will not be captain. Probably not even have an A. And he will be happier.
