That's too bad for Joe, that said, he had trouble showing up for games when he wore an 'A' for San Jose...

Man, the Sharks really cut the legs out from under Joe. Usually, that's done by the Wings.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said he didn't consider the move to be stripping former captain Joe Thornton of the "C" because the veteran would have an opportunity to earn the designation back.

"We're starting this year with a clean slate," said McLellan. "Coming into training camp, everyone is starting with no equity – from rookies through all of the veterans."

Patrick Marleau will also have the "A" removed from his jersey.

Had the Blue Jackets done this, Nash would still be here. They insisted on keeping him with the C and the situation just fell apart around him. Sometimes guys do better following someone else's lead.

I like this approach. McLellan's got the right idea.

And let's be honest, Jumbo hasn't really been the best captain. He's never lead them out of playoff adversity.

while I get where you're coming from and pretty much agree, Jumbo Joe doesn't strike me as the "take this as a challenge and rise to it" type of guy (which is part of the reason he shouldn't wear the C), but rather as a "go sit in the corner and sulk" type...just not too sure of how positive an impact this will have on the Sharks.

So they are saying "you're no good, but we don't think anybody on the team is better, so letters up for grabs. Start kissing our asses."

I can't the last time that I had this little enthusiasm for the upcoming season. I should clarify and say that I am very much looking forward to hockey starting back up, just not the Sharks.

It seems like they are just wasting time before a rebuild. Maybe it has an effect on the locker room but I see the captaincy competition as window dressing. Wilson stuck his foot in his mouth talking about a rebuild and then wasn't able to move the two pieces that would start that process.

It was a very, very strange offseason in San Jose, that's for sure. Remained stagnant in every department while other West teams made significant upgrades.

Congratulations Sharks Nation. You have now just won the coveted moniker "Toronto West"

In terms of how teams treat their Captains, there is Montreal, a big step down to most all other teams, then Toronto (esp during the Ballard years) and now SJS

I feel like the captaincy is more honorary now than anything. The veterans on the teams are usually the leaders with or without a letter on their jersey.
