It sends a message to all of the OL that the Patriots will pay for performance but not for position. If Trent Brown excels, the Pats will be looking for LT again next year.
Replacing 4 members of the OL next year could have been a real nightmare. Mason, Thuney, Andrews and Brown. That might force Brady to retire.
