Mayock said there's 7 players that he can't understand why they didn't show and 3 of them he pointed out by name:

Geno Smith
Montee Ball
Kenny Vaccaro

Senior Bowl: A work in progress
January, 24, 2013 6:04PM ET
By Todd McShay and Steve Muench

FAIRHOPE, Ala. -- Like the South workouts in Mobile, the workouts at Fairhope Stadium were light and without pads. And like the South notes, here's a look at some wide receivers on the North squad.

The transition for Michigan WR/QB Denard Robinson (5-10½, 196) hasn't been as easy as he hoped. For example, he had a false start today.

But being able to take the yellow jersey off allowed him to run and show his ability to run with the ball in his hands. That has helped matters. With that yellow jersey on, it put him on an island and put him in situations where he wasn't comfortable.

Moving forward it's important as to who is coaching him and with whom he is playing. If he goes back to Ann Arbor, Mich., and focuses on running a fast 40, that's not going to work. He needs to focus on running routes and catching the football. That's just one piece of the puzzle.

Robinson will have his pro day, but teams that are interested in him are going to work him out separately on campus in Ann Arbor. If he shows improvement there, that will be a huge help.

This week at the Senior Bowl sets the baseline for him. If he performs a little better at the combine and if he performs a little bit better in late March and early April when teams are on the campus for their individual visits -- where teams will sit with his offensive coordinators and wide receiver coaches -- that's where he has a chance to see the movement.

If he does it could be a real encouraging sign. It could catapult him and get some teams even more excited about him.

But stepping back and looking at this week, he has struggled. But he has to realize this week isn't the end, it's the beginning. He has to focus on route running and catching passes as well as punts. He needs to show he's coachable and that he can become an intriguing offensive weapon prospect as a conversion quarterback.

Aaron Dobson (6-2⅝, 203) from Marshall caught the ball well. He made a nice over-the-head catch in the end zone in red zone drills. He made a couple other tough contested catches. The past two days he has really come on and found his comfort zone.

Another wide receiver who impressed us was Texas' Marquise Goodwin (5-8⅞, 179). He was out at the NFLPA bowl in California a week ago. He practiced on Jan. 15, cramped up a couple times and then left after he got the call to come to Mobile. He has made himself some money this week.

Everyone knows he's fast, but he didn't always get the ball in the situations where he could take advantage of his speed. He has a lot of work to be done as a route runner, because he has straight-line speed and he's better there than stop-starts, lateral quickness and getting in and out of breaks.

But he has shown to be a better athlete than expected. He's capable of stretching the field and making big-time plays.

North notebook

• Washington CB Desmond Trufant (5-11⅛, 190) doesn't have elite man-to-man coverage skills, but he has done a nice job on trail covers this week. He seems to be most comfortable in that type of coverage, and we've seen that on tape, too. On tape, he has been inconsistent with balls skills, but had a nice interception on Thursday.

• Oregon State CB Jordan Poyer is not great at recovery skills, but when he's working underneath and in the slot he holds his own and does some nice things with his anticipation in jumping routes. He had a nice pass breakup on a short throw. You have to protect him, though, and that's why we think he's an early Day 3 prospect.

• Oregon RB Kenjon Barner (5-9¼, 188) was quick running routes and caught the ball well. He had a nice touchdown during the team period. He looked fluid and clean catching the ball.

• You can see why UConn LB Sio Moore (6-foot-0¾, 242 pounds), who was a late addition and who looked good on Wednesday, is an intriguing prospect, especially in terms of him taking the next step when it comes to the combine. You can see Moore has strong east-west reach. The way he was running makes you think he will test well at the combine. In terms of the offseason process, he's capitalizing and he looks as if he can continue that momentum into Indianapolis.

• Harvard fullback Kyle Juszczyk (6-1⅛, 248) caught the ball well as he has been targeted a lot in the past couple of days. He didn't have a drop. It's not a position that's highly valued, but he has done a good job of making the most of the opportunity.

• UCLA punter Jeff Locke had a short punt on his first attempt, but after that he had good hang time and good distance. He does need to quicken his release. It looked like it was taking too long to get the ball off his foot.

• Oregon offensive guard Kyle Long (6-6⅛, 304) was back at practice and that was good to see.

Per Tyler Wilson, the South team drew straws for QB rotation. EJ Manuel will start, followed by Wilson, then Landry Jones #SeniorBowl

Cal OC Schwenke was a surprise invite to me but he had a solid wk. His mean streak and initial quickness off snap stood out most

You never know with this kind of stuff. Either way, I find it interesting.

Matt Miller:

Word on the street in Mobile is that the #49ers are in love with Zach Ertz. Not surprising with Stanford connection.

What to watch in Senior Bowl game
January, 25, 2013 1:24PM ET
By Todd McShay

MOBILE, Ala. -- Premier talent rises to the top at college all-star games. It can take two or three days, but by the end of a long week of scouting-friendly practices -- full of one-on-one drills and other situations that highlight NFL prospects' strengths and weaknesses -- the top players are easy to identify.

The 2013 Senior Bowl is no exception. Plenty of players have had good weeks, and these five have been the best in Mobile this week.

1. North Carolina DT Sylvester Williams
2. Central Michigan OT Eric Fisher
3. Oklahoma OT Lane Johnson
4. Connecticut CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson
5. Georgia DT Johnathan Jenkins

What should fans be looking for when the Senior Bowl game itself kicks off? Here's a look at some of the top scouting points to consider as the game approaches:

Momentum on their side

Vince Williams stood out from the crowd thanks to his speed and closing burst.

Florida State ILB Vince Williams and California CB Marc Anthony were better than expected this week and are looking to capitalize on strong practice performances.

Williams' range -- particularly his straight-line speed and closing burst -- have been impressive, and Anthony showed good playmaking instincts while getting his hands on more passes than any other defensive back here.

Others who flashed this week: UCLA DE Datone Jones, Rutgers LB Khaseem Greene, Florida RB Mike Gillislee, Kentucky G Larry Warford, Missouri Southern DL Brandon Williams, Southeast Louisiana DB Robert Alford, Connecticut LB Sio Moore and Wake Forest FB Tommy Bohanon.

Two who need to show up

The practice week was underwhelming for defensive ends Ezekiel Ansah and Margus Hunt, both of whom lack ideal experience and are still raw talents.

We knew there would be some bumps in the road for Ansah, but he simply failed to flash as often as we expected given his rare combination of size, power and speed.

Hunt looks the part with his massive (6-foot-8¼, 277 pounds), well-proportioned frame and exceptional wingspan (82¼ inches). He continues to improve his hand usage and was disruptive at times throughout the week, but Hunt's lack of suddenness really stood out when studying him during one-on-one drills and team reps.

Others who need to step up: Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib, Kent State G Brian Winters and Virginia OT Oday Aboushi.

Five things to watch
After a week spent gathering scouting notes on practice situations, there are a few things we'll be studying closely once the game actually kicks off. Here are five of the most intriguing:

1. Denard Robinson's conversion. The standout college quarterback continues to be bothered by a right elbow (ulnar nerve) injury as he transitions to wide receiver, though he was cleared for full contact Wednesday and Thursday. That allowed Robinson's quickness and open-field running skills to finally shine through. However, he fought the ball more than expected (and the bar was set low to begin with) and did not appear as fast on vertical routes in live action as he seems to be on tape. Robinson needs to cap the week by catching the ball well and showing he is improving as a route runner.

2. Will Mike Glennon continue to separate? Glennon was clearly the most complete of the six quarterbacks on the Senior Bowl rosters. His arm separates him from the pack, but there are still concerns regarding his ability to maneuver in the pocket and command a huddle. Teams in need of a quarterback -- the Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, New York Jets -- will be keeping a close eye on those two aspects of Glennon's game Saturday.

3. Are any other quarterback's gamers? Tyler Wilson (Arkansas), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), EJ Manuel (Florida State), Zac Dysert (Miami (Ohio)) and Nassib all experienced their fair share of struggles during the practice week. Most of them, particularly Wilson, made improvements as the week progressed. However, playing quarterback is all about how you perform in game conditions. We will be watching closely to see if any of the five are up to the challenge.

4. Oklahoma OT Lane Johnson vs. UCLA DE Datone Jones. This will be a great opportunity to see two things. First, can Jones continue to stand out as a 4-3 defensive end in game situations? Second, this matchup provides a good comparison of Johnson and Fisher, whose biggest struggles during the week came against North teammate Jones.

5. Big play wide receivers. This year's wideouts aren't the most polished group, but we saw a lot of big-play ability from vertical threats like Marquise Goodwin (Texas), Terrance Williams (Baylor), Markus Wheaton (Oregon State), Tavarres King (Georgia), Quinton Patton (Louisiana Tech) and Aaron Dobson (Marshall).

Goodwin is a straight-line route runner who needs a lot of work on intermediate routes, but he can flat-out fly. The former two-time national long jump champion turned a lot of heads this week with his ability to take the top off the defense. Williams and Wheaton have the best combinations of size, speed and college production in the group. King had his struggles this week, but we've seen plenty of examples of his deep-threat ability while facing SEC competition during the season. Finally, Dobson and Patton are not as fast as the first three, but both have deceptive acceleration and have been making a lot of plays down the field.
