And there is the rub. Some might say that both Murray and Dez did exactly that. I know that the DEz situation is still very fluid, but I think the family apsect of the cowboys is fading(may not be a bad thing) and its becoming a business for everyone involved.

I don't think Stephen Jones is anywhere nearly as attached to the players as Jerry was/is. Those cushy contracts for guys who are no longer worth it are done. Just look at the Demarcus Ware situation.

Looks like the Cowboys blinked first. Scandrick to report to Cowboys facility on Monday. Word is there is an agreement in place to increase Scandrick'c current salary. Dallas will not be docking Scandrick for the missed time, as such it will not affect his attendance based bonus.

I figured this would be the case. Scandrick was far outperforming his contract, and Dallas did the right thing. It would be complete hypocrisy on Dallas' part to ask Brandon Carr to take a pay cut due to poor play, and then on the other hand tell Scandrick "you're under contract, deal with it".

Scandrick and Dallas agree to 1yr/9.5m extension. Scandrick is now under contract through 2019. My understanding of the deal is that it will increase Scandrick's salary for the next few years and add an additional year.

2015: 1.5m increases to 4m
2016: 3m increases to 4m
2017: 3m increases to 4m
2018: 3m increases to 4m
2019: 4m

I haven't seen the official breakdown of the numbers, but I believe this is what they will look like (or will be very close). Even with the increase Scandrick is still a bargain, especially when you look at the contract Jimmy Smith of the Ravens just got (4yr/48m). Scandrick was rated the 10th best CB in the league according to ProFootballFocus.

Scandrick is either a real team player, or his agent sucks. He should have been able to parlay his performance into a bit more money considering the money other CB's are getting.

I'm having trouble matching up his previous contract to those new numbers. Assuming sites aren't yet updated it looks like he was already at $3M per year for 2016-2018 and at $1.5M for this year. As far as his agent goes he was in a long term contract so adding the money you listed above to that isn't too bad.

I think Scandrick is a very good CB so even though I am against it and don't like opening up contracts for guys that are still signed long term and wouldn't do it myself I don't have a huge problem with this

You're correct about Scandrick's current(former) contract. He was scheduled to make $1.5m this year and $3m in 2016-18. Those salaries are likely to be increased to $4m per 2015-18, which accounts for $5.5m of the extension. Then add on additional year in 2019 at $4m and that is how we arrive at 1yr/$9.5m extension. I have to assume that Scandrick will see an increase in his current base salary, that's what this whole thing was about.

Dallas effectively has Scandrick signed for 5yr/$20m with very little guaranteed money. That blows a lot of other CB contracts out of the water in terms of value. This is still a great deal for Dallas.

So then how do you feel about Dallas asking Carr to restructure his contract? It cuts both ways...

Not only am I fine with it, I am strongly in agreement with it. It's how the NFL works. Positives: Big signing bonus. Negatives: no guaranteed contracts and you can be cut and never see the money. Every player knows this BEFORE he signs his contract so there was no bait and switch here. We can't force Carr to take a pay cut but we can cut him if he doesn't. The pay cut is a settlement and he doesn't have to accept it and I am fine if he does not.

So you're okay with owners being able to cut players who don't perform up to their pay grade, but not okay with players holding out for better deals if they perform above their contract? Greg might call you a hypocrite...

Absolutely I'm OK with it. That is exactly how it works with no guaranteed contracts. I call it being a realist.

Personally, I'm totally fine with players holding out for better deals. It's just a different side of the same coin in relation to owner/gm cutting a player not performing up to their contract. If the player is worth it, he will get paid -- it's an annual event with Darrelle Revis, and he wins out virtually every time. In this instance Scandrick was deserving of more money, and he got it.
