Briere can't stay healthy, why the fuck would anyone pay his ridiculous contract for s guy who has been on a decline for some time. Free up cap space and move on. I still can't figure out why some of you want this contract on our hands for a guy who is constantly injured or only shows up in the playoffs? What good is he if he's not playing and the Flyers are stuck paying $6.5 per? Makes no sense. Furthermore, it's not like we can restructure his contract. It is what it is. I'd almost rather keep Bryzy one more year then buy him out and buyout Briere. Btw, I'm not a Briere hater.

hey guys, i go into a hole when the flyers don't make the playoffs. i am bitter and don;t wanna talk about them.

what i think the flyers should do:

buy out bryz and buy out briere. my thing is that we know bryz is going to get bought out, if it ain't this year it is next year. i can never judge by the media and what they report but i get this overwhelming feeling just by the way the flyers players talk that bryz in net makes them uncomfortable. they play scared. he had a better year than last year but nothing worthy of his contract. i want them to sign ray emery, but for nothing longer or more money than mason. (that could be tough)

lines next year:
voracek giroux hartnell
simmonds couterier schenn
gagne laughton read
rosehill talbot rinaldo (i actually think this line could be great for their purpose)

couple things - i wouldnt resign gagne for more than 2.75 and that is on the high end, if not mcginn or another young guy would have to fill it up. talbot can play anywhere, that is why i would probably resign hall for cheap to fill in for injuries. i like schenn on couteriers wing not the other way around.

defensive pairings:
timonen schenn
grossmann pietrangelo (mez)
gust coburn

i don't know what return you get for mez but i think he has got to go, if anything to relieve space for a offer sheet for pietrangelo.

in short I don't see them doing much this offseason just making some tweeks. if they land pietrangelo that would be great. i don't want them to trade away anything for bobby ryan, i think we can sign him as a free agent next offseason. just ride this roster and don't be stupid, try and get the franchise financially in the right place again.

pietrangelo will be very tough to get, but aside from that i agree 100%.. and i guess i dont disagre w/ the pietrangelo acquisition haha, just think it will be hard.. the flyers should find someone else to conspire against the blues with.. so that shattenkirk and pietrangelo both get offersheeted at the same time.. the blues would be so pissed.

very good point about bobby ryan

i'm curious if the blues are willing to sell shattenkirk at slightly lower than market value to prevent a team from offersheeting him. st. louis will match any offer sheet on either of those defensemen in my opinion, but they might not want to get locked into a really lousy overpaid contract. it's wishful thinking though. i'd just really love pietrangelo or shattenkirk on our team.. i'm starting to think that they are this year's weber and suter.

st. louis would probably never part with pietrangelo, but i wouldnt consdier shattenkirk out of the question. if we offered them some nice picks, a solid roster player and a defenseman to fill shattenkirk's spot, you gotta think they'll at least consider it. something like a 1st, read/schenn and coburn/mez is probably what they'll ask for (even then i bet they want more). and they'll definitely want coots too. it's going to - yet again - be really tough to acquire one of these guys, just like it was with weber and suter

hate to beat a dead horse here.. but all this defense talk really does prove that top tier defensemen in their prime are rarely, if ever, to be had. teams just dont give them up in today's nhl. really shows the importance of drafting well for your defense.

exactly. the price of acquiring a stud two-way #1 dman is just too high. sure they have tons of value and help a lot, but are they really worth a 1st round pick, a top 6 forward with potential for top 3, and a top 4 dman? IMO, they're not. but that is the market for them because there are so few around.

like you said, drafting dmen is vital if you want a stud two-way #1. however, that player is not necessary to win if you play good team defense.

agreed. there's no real formula for building a good defense. team's like NJ have a committment to a real team game and most seasons thrive without a true "number one" guy on defense. teams like vancouver have lots of really really good puck moving defensemen, but no true "elite" number 1 guys.

then again, you have teams like boston and LA who have chara and doughty and can show the importance of having that #1.

when all is said and done, i still think having a true #1 is very vital. they singlehandedly change a team. they allow the rest of the defensemen to be slotted into spots that better suit them and let them play slightly less minutes and these #1 players can be on the ice for half the game.

it's a shame we caught pronger at the tail end of his career, because in 2010 he showed what a difference a big time #1 guy can make. he was part of a team that went to the finals 3 out of 5 years. no coincidence.

with that being said, we can still be extremely successful without these types of defensemen, just takes a team-wide approach to defense and to moving the puck well.

because bob gainey is bat-shit retarded.. they got him for freakin gomez.. one of the worst trades in history

moore the flyers could've had if they didn't trade the draft pick for pronger :P

girardi is more of a defensive specialist

This is what i mean other teams keep coming up with good defenseman and we dont. No matter the circumstances we need to do a better job of discovering defensive talent.

we have Timo who will retire after this season and Schenn via an even trade and Grossman when he's not hurt . Other that that we need to start finding guys. having Bryz hurts how our defense looks so maybe that could be the key. Or maybe were just stuck with injury prone guys and need to start looking in a different direction.
