Someone screwed up on the whistle as it either should've been a dead ball with the Saint's keeping it or Detroit should've been able to scoop and score it.

The hand was empty when his hand went forward, so by rule that is a fumble because Brees wasn't gripping the ball when he went through the throwing motion. But, as luck would have it he still hit the ball forward so it seemed like a forward pass to whichever guy was blowing it dead before it was even recovered.
