He's 31, has a lot of years left.
And they don’t have to “reach” to grab their next QB. Carr is there for 4 years, likely 2-3. The Saints have multiple drafts to find a developmental guy and get him ready.

Jimmy G is more careful with the ball and has a defense, so it's a tough comparison. Carr has never had a defense his whole career.

Derek Carr's averages an INT on 2% of his passes during his career.
Jimmy G averages an INT on 2.4% of his passes during his career.

Jimmy G has the perception of being careful with the football because the 49ers didnt trust him enough to throw the football very often because they knew what would happen.

Strong find. I had the same perspective on Jimmy G taking care of the ball.

ESPN is reporting "sources," but there was that Carr tweet where he posted "Who dat," so it sounds like a done deal.

I think the highest ranking defense Carr ever had was 13th in one of his first couple of years. Other than that one year Carr has never had a D in the top half of the league.

I read somewhere that he never had better than a #25 defense?

Did the Jets not offer a comparable contract? I feel he would've had better pieces around him there, surprisingly enough.

Rumor is they are working on a deal to trade for Rodgers.

I don't see that as a step up necessarily. Maybe in the very short term, but they will probably be giving up the picks they need to get someone drafted behind Rodgers.

He has a better chance in the NFC.

That's the rumor in NY as well. I was actually hoping for Carr as he's much younger, not as much of a hit on the cap and Rodger's is a flake that could decide to retire soon.

Plus, we already did the "washed up Packers legend" thing a few years back, and it didn't work out too well.

You sure? In my lifetime, I can’t recall many better Jets seasons than that Favre season.

Does that include Sauce Gardner and a #1?

Highly doubt that... Rodgers trade value down some after last year and pretty big salary cap number on top of that.

Got this forwarded to me Former Agent Gives Incredible Insight on Aaron Rodgers' Situation - Zone Coverage

The low end of Rodgers’ trade value should be a 2023 second round pick, assuming he is dealt in a timely fashion. The high end would be a 2023 first round pick with a conditional 2024 second round pick that could become a first round pick depending on either Rodgers or the team’s 2023 performance and whether he commits to play in 2024.
A team should want some assurances from Rodgers about playing at least two seasons before giving up significant assets to obtain him. Otherwise, he’s just a very expensive one year rental for $59.515 million.

As a general manager, I would feel comfortable giving up a 2023 second round pick and a conditional 2024 second round pick for Rodgers. The 2024 pick could become a first round pick with Rodgers taking at least 80% of offensive snaps during the regular season and the team winning a wild card playoff game or advancing to the divisional playoff round. I would want a conditional 2025 second round pick in return from the Packers that voids if Rodgers plays a second season for the team in 2024.”

They started 8-3, he got hurt, didn't come out because of his streak of games played and they ended up 9-7 missing the playoffs. 9-7 is one of their better years only due to decades of craptacular management and ownership. Going 1-4 in the last 5 games was quite the kick to the balls

This relates to past cap discussions we’ve had on this board and people constantly predicting cap doom and gloom for teams. The Saints are supposed to be one of those teams and yet here they are signing the best FA QB on the market. If your team isn’t manipulating the cap to perpetually kick the cab down the road, they’re not doing it right. So many of you guys just spout the line your ineffectual front office has sold you. Here ya go. Saints not cap strapped. Able to make a huge move with a commitment of big money.
The Saints didn't look in terrible shape to me. If Carr signs it will be on comparatively low 2023 and 2024 cap numbers. At least 1, and maybe both, of Winston and Dalton will be released. It made sense for Carr to sign with a team early and set the market. Even if he didn't it was in his interest to have the press saying he was close to signing for a high price. That would push the Seahawks and Giants towards tagging their QBs.
