Some will point out the Saints only paid cash to upgrade at QB, but at some point I can't help but ask if it isn't a strategic failure to not just allow the team to bottom out cap wise and rebuild with a QB.

They can still do that. That’s the thing about the NFL. That’s only a 2-3 year process.

Perhaps so. Seems like a butts in the seats move rather than a proper move to win to me. I think bottoming out cap wise was probably more efficient. I am pretty darn down on Carr though, so maybe that is worth disclosing.

Fair perspective especially if you are down on Carr. I think he’s actually a solid QB.

I think this is a good deal for both Carr & the Saints.
This contract allows Carr two to three years to prove he is all that & a bag of chips. Also if he isnt. Gives the Saints two to three years to get their cap back in order without wasting good rookie contract years on hitting rock bottom. So whenever they do get their next young QB they can take advantage of the rookie years.

Carrs contract if he is a complete failure (which I find him completely serviceable) the Saints could cut bait after two years. 2 yr 70 mil (17.1 dead cap) But the contract is most likely set up for 3 years if he is doing decent. So really his contract is more realistically 3 yrs for 100 mil.

Now if he becomes a badass in NO. Then I would figure they would extend him before the 4th year kicked in. So to me the Contract is a sound contract for the Saints to offer. Especially in this day & age of crazy QB contracts.
I give the Saints :thumb::thumb:

Congrats to Carr. $100M/3 years or $70M/2 years looks like the top end of his market. If it was my team i'd want those 2 amounts to each be $10M lower, but that's auctions for you.

I think the highest ranking defense Carr ever had was 13th in one of his first couple of years. Other than that one year Carr has never had a D in the top half of the league.
He was Matt Stafford in Detroit basically.

The Saints didn't look in terrible shape to me. If Carr signs it will be on comparatively low 2023 and 2024 cap numbers. At least 1, and maybe both, of Winston and Dalton will be released. It made sense for Carr to sign with a team early and set the market. Even if he didn't it was in his interest to have the press saying he was close to signing for a high price. That would push the Seahawks and Giants towards tagging their QBs.
Dalton is a FA.

He had a defense that was 15 or 16 1 season if I remember right.
His first 3 years with Del Rio as HC, they were 22, 20, 20 ranked scoring D. After that, Gruden was hired and the defense went to the bottom of the league. (32, 24, 30, 26). Derek was 12-3 in year 3 with close to 4000 yds and 28 TDs/ 5 ints before he broke his leg in the second to last game. The Raiders also had a decent Oline that year if my memory is right. Kinda shows how QBs get too much credit and too much blame in this league.

I know.

Trust and believe I know Carr isn't as bad as SportsHoopla thinks he is.

His 1st season Dennis Allen was the HC btw. The reason the Saints went out and got him.
