Vancouver Canucks trade Ryan Kesler to Anaheim Ducks - ESPN Los Angeles

"Ottawa is listening on Jason Spezza, though Senators general manager Bryan Murray does not sound enthused with the offers he has received so far, and San Jose appears interested in moving Joe Thornton, though the veteran captain has a no-move clause and, as a source informed ESPN.com recently, has no desire to play anywhere else."

JT wants to go to Ottawa?

Like it wasn't easy enough to hate Anaheim already. They didn't even have to give up Etem or the #10 pick. I think that Vancouver was afraid of another Louongo situation.

I think the reference to Thornton is that his availability may be driving down Spezza's price. Swapping Thornton and Spezza doesn't make much sense for either team.

Vancouver got the short end of that, no surprise there.
Was hoping Joe or Patty, or both, were moved today. From their comments, that's not gonna happen today, and possibly not at all.

We are stuck with those two clowns. Nice going Dougie. 3 more years. Should have let them become free agents. Maybe they would have been more motivated in the playoffs ... if that could ever be possible. Now we slowly drift into mediocrity the next 3 years. Not bad enough to get a great pick, just good enough to maybe make the playoffs and get washed out in the 1st round. And we will always be stuck playing Anaheim or LA first with the rotten new playoff format. Instead of firing Drew, the German should be firing Dougie for those deals.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of...becoming that middle of the road team. Good enough to get to the playoffs and get knocked out early each year.
The Ducks just got better, LA and Chicago are already better, so where does that leave them? I'd be fine w just starting over at this point, because they are not gonna beat the teams I just mentioned.

Yeah Anaheim got off light in that deal, Sbisa had only regressed since his rookie season, and Bonino isn't going to get any better. Steal by Murray assuming Kessler isn't a shell of his former self

Totally agree.
My friend is a huge Ducks fan, asked her about Sbisa, said he is awful.
Get on the horn now, trade Havlat for the twins!!!

Sbisa is a pile of shit, watching him the last few years on nights when the Kings don't play has been an eye opener. Showed a lot of promise in Philadelphia but was useless in Anaheim. Horrible reads, poor coverage and just gaffe after gaffe. He is young so who knows, maybe he can establish himself in Vancouver, but being on 3 teams under the age of 25 should be a red flag. I know a ton Ducks fans are happy he is gone, especially when you consider he was traded for Pronger.

Bonino had a career year, I don't see him replicating that. I think the Canucks got the best they could with a very limited market (Chicago, Anaheim or Pittsburgh) but the return wasn't great. Then again, Kesler isn't the same guy who he was 2-3 years ago though either. He's a step up from a 3C but not a legitimate 2C either in my opinion, kind of in between.

Burnside posted this article after the trade:

Kesler trade shifts balance of power in West - Cross Checks Blog - ESPN

Um, no it doesn't. The Kings were going to win with or without Kesler and the Cup still goes through LA and then Chicago. Anaheim needs a solid goalie and some improvements on defense in addition to depth up the middle. The Kings are also not capped out in any way and I see another Cup in the next 3 years because whatever other teams do, the Kings either already have it or can adjust if necessary because of the cap situation.

As it pertains to the Sharks, if Thornton is being shopped, and similarly holding a NMC/NTC like Kesler did, and in this bad a market this summer, I wouldn't expect much. Bad time to be making trades as a GM unless your hand was forced (like Kesler).

I think the nucks did fine there. Its only 2 years more for kesler and while 5M is a great price if he's healthy, but not if he's wonky. If he plays like last year, it's a terrible deal. Also, he had the huge benefit of playing with the twins who up to a year or two ago were top of the top 10 players in the NHL. Kesler got a major benefit from them like (like patty and cheech playing with jumbo). I don't see Kesler returning to 2010-2011 numbers, and if he can't top 50 points, then he's not exactly as big as his reputation.

Bonino may have topped out but even if he's a 20-20 player, he's under 2M for three more years. That's great value. Sbisa is a throw in but only signed for one more year. I see this as Kesler for bonino and a 1st. I think it's a reasonable haul for an injury prone player signing at a reasonably high 5M.

It could be a fabulous deal for the ducks if Kesler is healthy and productive, or a terrible one if he is injured and bonino goes on to play real well.

it makes good sense for both teams. The nucks speed up their rebuild quickly and the ducks take chance to make a big leap next year. Should be interesting to watch.

Great... the goon squad just got uglier. No word in the Sharks organization about anything today... I guess we are all fine with the Patty and Thornton show we have seen thus far.

<sigh>.. at least it looks like the Raiders wont suck as much any more.
