Plans are to have a game on the deck of an aircraft carrier...

The league’s managing director German Skoropupov says the hosting side would be HC VMF St. Petersburg, the Russian navy’s official club founded in 2008.

“We think it would be great to justify the club’s name and organize a match at the warship, anchored in the Gulf of Finland. We could construct an ice rink right at the top and play hockey,” Skoropupov shared the idea with the Sport Express paper.

“Of course, it would be very difficult to do, and even if we succeed there would be another problem – the weather in St. Petersburg has never been predictable. But since we managed to cope with that in Krasnoyarsk during the Winter Classic we will do the same with the Baltic winds,” said Skoropupov.

When asked how the players will feel under oscillating motion he retorted that both teams will be in similar conditions.

I hope the KHL will at least have life preservers on hand for the inevitable accident...

Seems like a REALLY bad idea to play a game involving a slippery surface on rocking boat.

Plus I'm not really looking forward to all the jokes about which team the ice is tilted towards.

The match won’t be the first of the kind though, with the US Navy’s super-carrier Carl Vinson hosting an NCAA basketball game between North Carolina and Michigan State in 2011...

Hey, if they can do basketball, they should be able to do hockey.

As for commentary of the game, who better than Bob "Old Man and the Sea" Cole and for analysis, Gary Galley

Hey, if they can do basketball, they should be able to do hockey.

I agree it's probably POSSIBLE, but I think hockey would me much harder to basketball. Now as some of you know, I can't skate worth a damn, so the following analysis could also be considered pure BS. That said, here goes. In basketball, the relative motion of the ship doesn't really affect movement all that much. It might make it slightly more tiring to go one direction than the other, but it doesn't affect your top speed all that much and over the course of a match should even out. Also, it has a negligible effect on the ball, since for the most part the ball is carried or airborne. In hockey even a small tilt will cause you to slide towards the downward angle if your skates aren't positioned perpendicular to the tilt. Also, the puck will be affected because it's almost always on the ice.

We'll see - I don't expect it to make such a huge impact on the game that it becomes unplayable, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few plays where it was noticeable.

Also, Zambonis on ships?

well, I've played hockey pretty damned drunk before (and once on acid, accidentally), so I can see how the sea-legs might shake things up a little. All in all it shouldn't be too bad for a game of shinney. Anything overly competitive could be trouble though.

as the resident Navy guy here, has anyone here ever been on a carrier? I have and those things barely roll at all in calm seas...and virtually not at all when moored pier-side as I'm fairly sure the Vinson was for the game mentioned above. I think a hockey game could easily be played on a carrier.

of course my knowledge only regards American carriers....who knows with Russian carriers

Did that with soccer a couple or 3 times. Can't really claim accidentally, though; I was well aware I was taking acid each time.
