Not sure I'm seeing your math there on the savings vs the cap over the next 3 seasons. That tag number on the 2017 season would be astronomical.

Can you imagine the impact if RW takes you to the SB this year and you have not signed him?

I tossed that idea around, but at the end I figured the Seahawks will extend him before the season starts. Better to pay more then you like now, because the price tag is only going up.

Oh, I agree totally. Can't imagine the franchise tag scenario once, never mind twice.....

Of course that would likely drive up the price on a new deal, but it wouldn't affect the tag.

The Franchise tag for QB in 2015 is 18.5 mill and that will be like 19-20 mill next season and around 23 in 2017. I bring this up because it's cheaper than paying 23 mill for 3 years. Wilson is under contract for 1.5 mill this season and they could tag him in 2016 for around 19-20 mill and 2017 for 23 million saving a buttload of cash over those three years. 23X3 = 69 million ( 23 average duh lol ), 1.5+20+23= 44.5 or a average of 14.8 mill a year. that 24.5 million savings over 3 years would allow them to sign Bobby and a couple others.

In return this also would allow the club to then sign him in 2017 for a 4 to 5 year deal and they would have much more cap room to work with.

Second time the tag goes up 20 % I think. Which in Wilson case is a lot.

How about we just sign our guy and move on.
It must be quite complicated for JS to fit RW, Wags, and more into a cap that does not have lots of room.

Players don't like to be franchised. IMO, it's foolish to assume that Wilson would want to stay in Seattle after being tagged once, let alone twice.

the tag is the average of the top 5 players at his position. Only way i see it at 24.5 is if Wilson and Luck both get contracts over the 25 mill per year mark this season. That wont happen if Wilson is getting tagged. No new huge contracts are going to be signed that i see in 2016 unless Wilson signs one in 16 and Luck, this again then makes the point invalid. Aaron Rogers makes the most right now per season at 22 mill per and that will be tops in 2016 if things stay as they are.

right now ( with Cams new contract ) its 22,21,20,20,20 for the top 5 in 2016 making the cap 20.6 per year in 2016. By the rules the 2nd year franchise tag will have to be 120 percent of the prior season's tag amount or 24.7. 1.5+20.6+24.7= 46.8 < 69 million that 23 per season would cost. Unless the Hawks can get Wilson to sign 20-21 mill per season i do not see them signing him and just using the Tag for a couple season.

I know people hate to see that and some might think it's a slap in the face to Wilson and really in some ways it is and in other ways it is not. It allows the club to continue to move forward with their "franchise QB" at market value ( not like he would be underpaid under the FT )and still retain and acquire new talent to place around him.

I should add that i want the Hawks to sign Wilson and get this over with but i totally understand why they are playing hardball with him. Right now the Seahawks have more power than Wilson holds.

Seahawks QB Russell Wilson Headed For Franchise Tag In 2016? | NFL Trade Rumors - NFL Rumors

According to this article for what it's worth, expect the franchise tag for Wilson to cost $24.5 million in 2016.

It that's correct then the second tag would cost a good deal more.

It's amazing where the national media is on RW's contract negotiations, either way out in left field or way out in right. John Clayton says he believes the two sides will get this done before training camp. I hope he's right, but we shall see.

would wilson ever get more money somewhere else?

i'm thinking no.

best of luck to him if he decides to give it a try, though. i hope the seahawks don't budge on what they're offering.

The mistake you're making in your numbers is that an EXTENSION this off-season still isn't going to change his 1.5 million salary for 2015 outside of SB proration, and the FO is savvy enough to finagle the numbers to make new money more salary cap friendly than it would be to tag him in '16 and '17.

that's one of the sticking point right now. The hawks want to keep his 2015 pay in place, where as Wilsons agent does not. if a contract is signed this offseason Wilson will be getting a pay raise this season more likely than not so no that is not where i am wrong. Assuming that his 2015 pay would remain the same if he signed a new contract this offseason is just that "assuming".

Nah, you're not getting it. The rules of the CBA don't allow the final year of this contract to simply be torn up. They do allow and extension on players in their rookie contracts after their 3rd season in the league (unless they were 1st rounder), but again it's an extension and not a contract that replaces the existing one. New years are appended to the current deal he signed as a rookie when drafted. His 2015 base salary will hold; the "raise" he's going to get is the up front money that will be part of the extension. I'm not assuming anything here -- just stating fact.

and what you do not understand is that his current contract could be amended to by a new one making his rookie contract 1.5m and the new one say 20.5m for the 2015 season. It was Ian Rapaport ( who is right way more than he is wrong ) that said the one of the sticking point is the amount of money Wilson ( Wilsons Agent ) wants for 2015 and what the Hawks want to pay. He reported the Hawks wanted to keep his 2015 salary the same where as Wilson's Agent wanted it to be raised to match that of the top QB salaries in 2015. I think Ian knows WAY more about the contract dealings and what is allowed and NOT allowed than both of us put together. With out a doubt.

Could this just be the agent "saying all the right things" when in reality they are working out a deal somewhere else but they are trying to make it look like they are "saving face" with the Seahawks

Oh ok, so just throw the CBA out the window and make up new rules?

What do you mean by "somewhere else?" -- Wilson is not a FA.
