Unfortunate that Cuse has the postseason ban, cuz it's starting to look like they may have actually been able to sneak up to a 7 or 8 seed

53 in the composite rankings, .7184, but more importantly 59th in the RPI. So uh, I doubt it.

Best win is neutral court win over Iowa? Best away win @ GaTech?

No. I don't think so. Maybe if they win two out of the 4 games left against Duke, VA and UofL, but realistically they aren't winning 2 of those games. They might not win any of them.

Unless SU pulls a couple of great upsets to end the season, I wouldn't see them getting in the NCAA tournament. But either way, is not unfortunate from the perspective that SU is getting post season bans at some point. We might as well get it out of the way.

SU has a shot at some good classes coming up. If they can get through these investigations without losing much more then this one ban, they should have some solid ball teams the next few years.

Get hammered with a few scholarship losses and another year or two post season bans recruits may go elsewhere and SU will be in a wicked hole.

I have my fingers crossed SU gets a break here. And this season's ban will be a blip on the map.

I know this will disappoint everyone but I won't be doing any BPI/Sagarin/KenPom updates until I can figure out how to post a table worth a damn on the new system.

Two of the flaws of the metrics is that it rewards you for playing good teams even if you lose, and it doesn't account for score.

I've been following Seton Hall's RPI. Villanova blew them out by 26 points and their RPI went up a few points.

Kansas is also a prime example. They have by far the most losses out of anybody on the top two lines, yet until yesterday's loss, they were #1 in RPI.

I also think that is where the media polls come in handy. They penalize you for losing and penalize you for losing big.

At the end of the day, none of it makes that much of a difference. You still have to win games in March, but just a thought.

I'm using KenPom, Sagarin and BPI. RPI is not included so pretty much everything you said above is wrong. Media polls suffer from recency bias. What you do during the week is nearly irrelevant as the weekend games (closer to voting time) have much more influence on the polls. Every ranking system is going to have it's flaws, but at least the computer ratings aren't biased.

Kansas also has more quality wins that ANY team in the country and it isn't even close.

Oh ok. My bad, I thought you included the RPI.

Either way, like I said, at the end of the day, teams end up where they should.

Trolley, you seem dialed in. I'm a huge Biose State football fan, but don't follow basketball nearly as close. Maybe watched 6 full games this year and this is usually the time of year I start to pay a little attention so I am not filling out the March pool completely blind. Unless BSU completely stumbles they should finish 1st in the MWC and have the #1 seed. Question is how well/far will they have to advance in the MWC tourney to get an invite to the big tourney?

Thanks in advance for the input.:suds:

I have to admit, I'm not sure that I've seen a single MVC game this season. (I do most seasons, but the combo of unranked teams and past my bedtime have conspired against me) So I'm probably not qualified to discuss it but according to the KenPom/Sagarin/BPI composite index, this is the current standings for the MWC.

37 San Diego St.
46 Boise St.
61 Colorado St.
100 UNLV
112 Utah St.
126 Wyoming
132 New Mexico
191 Fresno St.
213 Air Force
258 Nevada
347 San Jose St.

Without knowing where the MWC tournament is held, it looks like on paper they have a good shot at making the finals.

Looks like you have games left against SJS and Fresno St. Losing either one of those could be catastrophic. You don't want to get swept by Fresno and losing to SJS is all but unforgivable this late in the season. Boise's RPI is decent so that isn't a problem. I think as long as you make it to the championship game you'll be on the right side of the bubble. If you drop one in the semifinals, you could still make it in but it's going to be more dependent on what everybody else around the bubble does.

Interesting. A top 10 team in the AP and Coaches polls and RPI rankings sits at #30 in your rankings.

Umm...okay...

They aren't his rankings. It's Ken Pom, BPI and Sagarin, combined to make one ranking. These are the "metrics"

I'm assuming he chose to combine those 3 particular rankings into one which is what I mean't by his rankings.

Sagarin has the Terps in the top 10 as well, so I find it odd that Ken Pom and BPI are so far apart. It's odd.

Maryland gets penalized because they've been obliterated by middlin' teams on the road and have barely squeaked by some bad teams.

Ken Pom and BPI account for score difference. The polls and RPI just account for if you win. I think when Villanova got creamed by G'town, their Ken Pom defense went from like 10 to 40. It's extreme.

Sagarin has Maryland at 24 (and is still the highest of the three)
