The "code" was broken with the hard slide...if you appear to threaten one guy's lucrative career, then yours will be threatened.

I bet Escobar will won't camp out on second next time trying to make that turn. The only "code" in play there was a good, hard, slide to break up the double play. If the SS or 2nd baseman doesn't move, then injuries can/will happen.

Was Lowrie the one that threw his helmet down and it bounced back up and hit the ump? (when he was on the Jays)? He may have some anger management issues.

But as long as there is a concept of "breaking up the DP" then what he did really isn't out of line. Escobar does a quick jump out of the way and no one is talking about it.

wow, Lawrie might not know how to slide, lol, he might have been safe at home, just terrible slide.

Then, HE head hunts a catcher, that could end a career as well, good gawd.

Definitely more if he had hit him. You can't be throwing at guys' heads on purpose. Herrera was trying to kill the guy.

You think Kazmir should have been suspended??

He didnt throw at his head

He threw numbers high behind him

Kazmir restarted it by hitting Cain Sunday. At the very least he deserves a fine

He has lined up at the back of the bag to take a force out

There was no DP to be broken up

watch the replay just once, and you will see there was no chance of a DP. If there was, he'd have been lined up differently at the bag

On second look, you are correct. Much more of a grey area than I first thought...

And it's still a grey area. Was it reckless or intentional?

I'd probably say reckless, but it should still warrant at least a fine

I should have posted the whole play instead of just the slide. Would be abundantly clear that there is a near zero chance of a DP.

Seeing the context of the whole play definitely changes it for me. I think it was a little reckless and likely shows a lack of awareness on the part of Lawrie. I think it would have been over after he wore one the next day as the players tend to police these things themselves. Any escalation after that was unwarranted IMO.

I agree

Problem was, Ventura waited until after Reddick hit a 3 run bomb. If he'd have gotten Lawrie in his first at bat, he probably wouldn't have been ejected.

The escalation came after Kazmir hit Cain in the first inning the next day and both sides were warned. Not sure why Herrera felt the need to go after Lawrie again 6 innings later.

The curveball at the feet??? Is that what you are going with for "restarting" it? That is pretty-much the opposite of a "purpose pitch". Kazmir just missed his spot and the Royals(i.e. Herrera) overreacted.

I guess the runner doesn't take that into account while he's running. His goal is just to break up the DP. That said, I think Lawrie's slide was excessive, but Escobar also has to know it's coming....

I thought it was a cutter in, but I can look it back up. It was his 7th hit batter in 1,499 batters the past two seasons. It was the furthest pitch inside for Kazmir in over SEVEN years; he was pinpoint before and after that point in the game. And this coming after the previous night had Reddick's comments implying retaliation (albeit in Oakland) was coming. Hitting a guy in the legs knowing this. with a history of leg injuries, looks doubly suspicious. Not sure how it is out of the question that it is intentional.

I wouldn't say it was "out of the question", but that just isn't how it's usually done. Normally a purpose pitch is a fastball at a guy's numbers(or his ass). It just seemed like a weird spot to do it if Kazmir wanted to start more shit.

Find it hard to believe that if you're intentionally throwing at a hitter that you will hit him in the lower leg.

If Cain hadnt jumped, it would have hit him in the thigh

Then Kazmir walks to the plate while Cain is on the ground
