The Royals lineup improved, without a doubt, Morales/Rios(or even Dyson) over Butler/Aoki and 5 players not even in their prime years yet.
Everyone keeps talking about losing Shields, 1 pitcher out of 12/13, on the best pitching staff in the AL.
They did down grade a bit on Shields, because I dislike Edison, but then they turned around and improved their Long Reliever and bullpen, which was already the best in the majors.
The pitching staff will be fine.
If Edison and C Young had the royals defense last year, who knows how their numbers would have looked like.
Smart money is on Volquez or Guthrie not being in the rotation after the break.
Ideally Kyle Zimmer is ready to come up and be put into the rotation. Kris Medlen could also join the rotation.
Shields meant more to the Royals than just what he did on the mound. Apparently, he had quite an influence on Duffy and Ventura.
You could be right. We'll see.
One twelfth of the staff... That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at is is 16% of their total innings. Yet another way is 23% of the starters' innings. He was their best pitcher, and represented at least twice as much to the Royals as your 1/12 suggestion.
The Royals' team ERA ranked 4th in the AL in 2014.
Over the last three seasons, Volquez has an ERA+ of 84 and pitched an average of 80% less innings than Shields did last year. That's only "a bit" of a downgrade if you're a Royals fan.
The Royals' bullpen ERA ranked 10th in MLB and 5th in the AL in 2014.
Middle relief was scrubbish in that BP for most of the year. The backend 3 were averaging an ERA of roughly 1.2. Hopefully, Frasor, Young, Morales and soon Hochevar can shore that middle relief up. Absurd to be 10th in ERA with how Herrera, Davis, and Holland performed last year.

things that wont last:
the royals TEAM .329 BA/.932 OPS
TEAM era 2.57/.857 WHIP
good lord thats not sustainable
Medlen would be bullpen at best, I wouldn't want to see him near the rotation this season. Next ok.
theyre scoring six a gamealso not sustainable
first place red sox giving up 5 runs a game
royals will fall back to the pack. its only been a week.
theyre scoring six a game
is 6 greater than 5?
with this offense?6 runs per game is also not sustainable.
i played some melvins for you last nightcan you feel my lovebuzz?
