Played St. Anne's CC in Feeding Hills MA yesterday. A decent public muni. Played well but fucked up the last two holes...story of my life. Par 72, I was at +7 on the 17th tee. Bogey, Double finish for an 82.

The remarkable thing was playing with my friend and area golf legend Jim Peace. He shot an 83 and he turns 86 soon. Always a joy to watch the swing that won our club Championship ten times including a 6 year streak from '69 to '75. He's shot his age every year since turning 70!

First tee....

played my best round of golf ever yesterday with a 85. Had a 39 on the front, 46 on the back.

only had one blow up hole with a snowman that I really should have played smarter instead of trying to thread a ball through some trees after going into a hazard on my drive off the tee...dumb.

That is the single biggest key in making the jump from shooting 90 to shooting 80.

Eliminate doubles and worse. Take your medicine when you get in trouble and don't take those big numbers.

I knew my first tee shot was gone so I hit a provisional from the tee and put it right in the middle of the fairway. I should have just used that ball because where I dropped where I went into the hazard left no options.

Playing Sunday morning and then my club's scheduled to aerate the greens on Monday.

played the rural course with the great-assed barmaid today...
was 42° when we teed off at 10:45am; was 60° at the turn...
glorious clear windless day; had the course to ourselves...
only problem was all the greens had just been aerated and sanded*...
despite which, was amazing how many great putts everybody had...

1st hole - on in 2, took 4 putts. Held +2 thru the next 11 holes. Had a double plunk 7 on par 4 #13 and a bird on #18. 76 for the round.

lol... and I was the high hitter...
Mike and Randy both shot straight par 72s (whined and bitched the whole time); Jake went -1.

* was dew on the first 4 greens... putted balls would become little sputniks by picking up rings of fine sand and taking some radical rolls.

Hey guys, y'all might want to get one of these with fall golf upon us. Just picked it up from Amazon for under 50 bucks. It's a little bigger than a pack of smokes, very lightweight and it blows a very powerful blast. Meant for electronics, it's perfect for blowing leaves off your line!

It also throws a nice blast for cooling down with in the hot weather. Battery life is decent but no concern to me 'cause I have a Zip Navigator Ecart that it plugs into for continuous charging.

This time of year, if the green is covered, it's no worse than a 2 putt. Not just leaves are a problem, some of the greens and little seeds imbedded in them from people walking on them, no idea what which way your ball is going to go. Ball looks like a fucking jumping bean.

That would have come in handy yesterday. I played about 30 holes at Leslie Park in Ann Arbor. It was 49 & windy so there wasn't much traffic and I was able to jump around after the front 9. The leaves are the only drawback to playing this time of year when it's not as busy due to the cool weather, which I don't mind at all. 44 on the front and idk for the other 20 or so, but I made 2 birdies and 1 was after an 8 iron from 125 out of a sand trap to about 4 inches for a tap in. Best shot of the year so far, so that was fun. I love the course. It's gorgeous but it's very tight in spots so I invariably have a couple of blowup holes where I get in trouble. I probably have another month of play around here before shutting it down for the season.

Got a last minute invite down to Pinehurst over the weekend. Hit #2, Cradle, and #10. Special two days.

#2 - Drove the ball well but boy does that course punish you if you are even an inch off line. 41-41-82 (+10) with 4 doubles.

IMG_5062.jpeg

Cradle - There is nothing more fun that walking a perfect course barefoot with a wedge and a putter. Lipped out a hole in one on #9. No clue what I actually scored.

IMG_5068.jpeg

#10 - This is a course that yall need to get out to. Tom Doak has the tee to green feel very accessible but the green complexes are a mad house. Puts so much pressure on you to hit great approach shots. I had two puts on the day that I literally had to aim away from the hole to get them close. 41-38-79 (+9)

Tobacco Road Tuesday (46/45) and Wednesday (44/52) from the combo tees.
More sand than Waikiki... not a rake to be seen... 'you can ground your club and improve your lie but not your position.'

Was funny when the lip kicked mine back in the crater yesterday, wasn't it? Hah smartass... now it's your turn.

Played Tot Hill Farm on Thursday (38/43).

Tobacco Road is an other-worldly golf experience.
Tot Hill Farm is a gallery of 18 masterpieces...
(as well as being, by far and away the most fun a golfer can have while being humbled and -occasionally- applauded for 4½ hours.)

I’ve played TR three times. Been in that elephant graveyard all three times. Almost holed out from said elephant graveyard all three times.

Weird things is that #18 always feels disappointing there. Like the round is ending too early.

Glad you had a blast!

o mai yes
I kept hearing folks talk about this or that "signature hole" at the two courses... in my opinion all 36 holes are autograph-worthy collectibles.
We both loved TR... we both agreed NOT to brag up how way fucking awesome THF is... place is a treasure we'd rather not share. Gawd, and it's virtually in your back yard.

edit: my second coming on that bad boy saw me pop a beautiful 200yd fade with my 7-wood* right around the rim onto the mat for another obligatory 3-putt double.

* love that club

played our rural course with the great-assed barmaid this morning...
was 36° when leaving home at 7am... was 46° at our 9am tee time... was 76° when we finished up at 1245pm
outdrove scratchman Mike on almost every hole; had 3 birds, 4 triple putts... he shot +2 for the round... I shot the temperature.

we're driving 2½ hrs north tomorrow to play the Nightmare ( The Nightmare Golf Course ) one last time (they close on Sunday) tomorrow...

s'been a great year... got to a bunch of really nice runs (played total of 49 rounds)... improved my game a lot - plenty of room for more.

I think I've fixed something that I've been doing wrong forever... too much right hand influence with my grip & swing. I was squeezing it too much with my right thumb and forefinger which was impeding a full wrist hinge and release. So I just relaxed my right thumb and laid it over instead of down the shaft. It felt weird at first... too loose with no control, but the results were immediate and unmistakable... better ball flight, more distance and surprisingly more consistent accuracy.

After 2 range visits getting used to it (it still feels kind of weird) I took it to the course yesterday and had my best ball striking day that I can recall. I only shot an 86 (42/44) from the whites (~6400) at Lakes of Taylor which is good but not great for me. But given the conditions.. 50 cloudy and windy I was delighted. I hit a couple of bad shots and my short game wasn't great, but the grip/swing change did not fail me from the 1st through the 18th. I wish the season wasn't winding down but I'm going to try to get a couple more rounds in before the snow flies.

That's exciting!

My big eureka this year was a simple one but I was not fully rotating. I started turning my belt buckle fully toward the target at the finish earlier this year and just like this discovery for you, it has consistently helped with my ball striking all year long. I think it's good advice for any swing.
