Niners offensive coordinator echoes position that team “evaluated” Peyton Manning | ProFootballTalk

This still bothers me. What's wrong with saying, "Hey Alex, we like you, but we're talking about Peyton freakin' Manning here."

The fact that they're playing to Alex's feelings doesn't instill confidence in me that he can be a true leader.

Or maybe I'm just making too much of it.

Ya, I'm not sure I believe Roman at all. Harbaugh has probably instructed him to hold the company line and be very careful about hurting Smith's psyche. Having said that, if they couldn't get Manning, then I'm satified with Smith. I think they can win with him.

It's not about winning or not winning with Alex. It's about your starting QB being a mentally weak individual.

how could smith be mentally weak after going through so much in his career? say what u want about his ability as a qb but being mentally weak really shouldn't even be a question with smith.

Alex Smith is mentally weak because Greg Roman answers a question about the starting QB the 49ers will be playing against Sunday night? There would be some validity to it, if Roman, out of no where, brought up the Manning BS on his own. But he did not. This is being over analyzed.

To me, I don't see anything positive flatly coming out and saying that they're looking to get another guy to take his spot. It'd be like an employer coming to you and saying "you did a decent job last year, but we're gonna go interview other candidates to see if we can find someone better". I realize it's the nature of the beast when it comes to football and all professional sports, but I don't think its a reflection of the player and his psyche when management tries to deflect interest in another player. Seems like just basic common courtesy.

I think you might be making too much of it. I dislike when coaches do this too, because as you said it makes me feel like they are pampering the QB and trying to protect him from people bringing up Manning if/when Smith struggles.

I think this is one of those coaching strategies that sounds good when they talk about it in private but when they go out and talk about it to the media it backfires and makes us ask if they're trying to convince themselves or us about Alex Smith qualities. I've always disliked this coaching stance when it is used in QB battles, because they act as if they always wanted so-and-so to be the starter anyway and from the beginning they felt he deserved the job... so it makes you ask, then why have the QB competition dummy? It makes us feel like this.

But in the end, who cares if they do this... it won't make Alex Smith play any better or worse if Roman and Harbaugh pretend the 49ers weren't interested in Manning. You know? It doesn't change a thing.

I respect your style of posting and I love your avatar. Your username's pretty cool.

Here's my summary for those who don't like essays (still long, but shorter):

Harbaugh doesn't like the media, criticism, or how things are shaped. He wants to reshape it. The 49ers wanted Manning at their price, Manning wanted more. Didn't work out, they feel no need to say negative things, want to combat negativity in the press with over-positivism. Roman responded to a question asked, unlike Harbaugh. Inconsistency would be reported greater than the status quo (imo). Other coaches lie, exaggerate, deceive, etc. too. The media exaggerates things, too. NFL.com and ESPN had commenters saying that Harbaugh was crazy to think we would believe that we had no interest, when Harbaugh didn't say that. There were plenty too who accurately reported his message. My problem is with the innaccuracy. As far as Smith's psyche, they could say these things to shield Smith, for all I care, I just don't think he needs it.

I know it's still long, but f' it, that's how I post. 6 year olds can understand what I said, long or short. I didn't make this thread, I just said what I felt. If people don't like my essays, ignore them.

I believe Harbaugh and co. would've taken the same line with the media regardless of QB as it's their style to always build up players in the media and to never be negative.

I wouldn't consider Smith to be a mentally weak individual because I don't think Harbaugh would have Smith on the roster if he was mentally weak. The mental aspects of his game are fair questions to ask when it comes to decision making and decisiveness in the pocket but we're not talking Ryan Leaf or Vince Young in terms of mental toughness.

Oh, SY8goat, I don't have a problem with you asking me about my essays. You were polite about it and I know that I do write long and some don't like it. (I don't think anyone "likes" it per se, but some will read and understand and converse.) You have to understand that over the past week or so, I feel like a few posters are making a big fit about me being a fan of Alex Smith and me writing longer responses. I am a Niner fan first and have admitted my limited knowledge over other positions. Heck, I admitted my limited knowledge about QBs. too. But it doesn't mean, I'm not going to post on here. I don't care to shorten my responses because they are free to ignore what I said. Some may read it and have a correction or agree. I'm on this board to have fun, there are some people who I have had a good time conversing with, with my long essays and all. I'm not here to make people happy, to edit my comments, etc.

Lol. I'll reduce each paragraph to one sentence and then if someone misinterprets the sentence, I'll explain. Four to five sentences can't be too long, huh? A lot of my writing is pre-emptory, meaning I will explain because I know how things can and will be taken wrong... then they get long. Then, the same old shit complaints.

Ya, I don't like them coddling Smith like a child. I think he is stronger than they give him credit for. I can't think of a qb who has been through more and persevered than Smith has. He really grew up in that Saints playoff game. I think he is going to improve this year even more. We'll see.
