Although Caddyshack is my favorite all-time funny movie, I have to disagree with you Cal. I'm of the mind that movies are a lot like baseball players.....it's hard to (read: almost impossible) make an apples to apples comparison of different eras. Senses of humor do change over time.

In my humble opinion of course.

In general, I agree.

But kids these days, they don't know real comedy...

For the record: none of the movies I listed are equal to Caddyshack, Animal House, or (my favorite) The Holy Grail...although I think Borat comes close.

I am sorry, I would put Stripes, Caddyshack, Animal House, Holy Grail, Fast Times, Slapshot, etc against ANY group of movies from the last 20 years.

Some from the last 20 years (or so) that MAY be able to hold their own...

Hangover
Austin Powers
... (I am sure I am missing a few good ones, but there really are not many)

I am not a huge Will Farrell fan, even though Anchorman was decent. Ben Stiller is just painful.

Agreed on all points EXCEPT:

The Wedding Crashers
Napoleon Dynamite

And Hangover isn't in the same class as the great ones.

Animal House, Caddyshack, Stripes, Meaning of Life, Holy Grail, Arthur, Pink Panther, Ferris Bueller are the best.

Some great grade B comedys: Making the Grade, Nightshift, Jeckyl and Hyde Together Again.

:tj: Some other good ones from the last 20 years:

Swingers

The Big Lebowski

There's Something About Mary

Office Space

40 year old Virgin

Best in Show

Napoeon Dynamite

The first Jackass move

Borat!!

Love all those except Jackass, which is just OK.

The Big Lebowski is in its own class, and not a typical comedy.

I was thinking the same thing, but if I can include Fast Times, he gets to include Lebowski.

To be technical, my list ranged from 1975 (Holy Grail) to 1982 (Fast Times); a range of 7 years.

Your list ranged from 1994 (Half Baked) to 2004 (Anchorman); a range of 10 years.

I was closer to a single era than you.

:boink:

My bad, you are right on Grail. So your era was late 70s early 80s like you said. And I actually think Life of Brian (1979) is = Holy Grail, so that adds to your 'golden era' thesis.

I wasn't going for an era though I was trying to show that comedies didn't stop being awesome in 1983 or whatever...

I think we all pretty much have overlapping senses of humor...

LOB is great, but it does not compare to HG or MOL. I might even rate FCW ahead of LOB...

Monty Python movies in order...

Holy Grail
Meaning of Life
Fish Called Wanda (stretch, granted)
Life of Brian

Really? Man, we are very far apart on LOB. I think most consider it at least HG equal, with MOL way below (I agree with that). Not that it matters what 'most' consider when it comes to pop culture preferences.

Love FCW too but a different animal entirely. FCW >>> MOL for me.

The Big Lebowski > Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

This. And I really like Fast Times (those guys are FAGS).

MOL is by FAR the best Monty Python film. Every Sperm is Sacred? Mr. Creasote (it's wafer thin)? C L A S S I C!!

Which way did that elusive fishy, ah gooooooo?

Hey, I love me all Python, I actually like the TV show best, but MOL isn't quite as classic to me. And good for you repping the weirdest moment in any of their movies...

The Big Lebowski > Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Nothing against The Dude, but that is sacrilege.

The soundtrack, the fantasy sequence, ALL the Spicoli quotes...

My old man is a television repairman. He's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix this.

You can't fix this, Spicoli!!

[pause] I can fix this.

Those guys claimed they never did any drugs, which is pretty hard to believe considering...
