Yeah but just looking around it seems most of higher priced guys are pitchers. It’s kind of like the offseason, if they are going to get a young controllable guy then they are going to have to deal one of the 4 starters (not even knowing if Gilbert or Miller will be healthy enough to trade) I mean who knows it just seems like this deadline is going to be similar to the offseason where the teams needs aren’t going to be there.

But this is also why I want them to hurry up and promote the entire Everett team cause that makes them all much closer to the big leagues which makes them most valuable trade chips
You're probably right more pitchers on the block but right team now team doesn't need a young controllable player and mangle our rotation. We have that in the minors but giving up a prospect depending on which vet batter to choose from is the better option. My whole thing is keeping our rotation in tact cause any given day this lineup can go to shit and they need to lean on the starters.

In the keeping it real category, the Ms have won the last 9 series on a row. None of those teams is currently above .500.

The last teams they played that are above .500 were the 2 just before this streak against Detroit (lost 2 of 3 at home) followed by getting swept at SF.

I do think they are improving in their approach at the plate and it is paying off.

Still, they are too thin at too many positions to seriously compete at the top of the league.

The good news is the A's are the only other AL West team above .500 right now. You don't have to be a top 5 team this year to contend for the division.

Can they continue to beat all of the mediocre to bad teams to be there at the late stages of the season? We will see.

Pleasantly surprised by the good start, but we’ve seen this before and the offensive eventually fizzles out… We knew they’d be decent with this pitching staff, in games, BUT the offense has so far done better than we expected… Hypothetically speaking let’s say the M’s are in a good position come the trading deadline, WILL they go after more offense for a shot at a World Series or do what they usually do, go cheap ? That’s the question, because this team can’t beat the top teams in a series when it counts, as it sits …

But it’s super encouraging that the bottom of the order at least are playing like MLB players. Even against crappy teams the past few years, if the starter didn’t have QS, the game was over.

17 in a row in June and then another 17 in a row in July. Thank goodness for the AS between those stints.

If Kirby and Gilbert are healthy and making their regular starts, if offense can continue to be even 80% as good as they have been the past couple weeks, and if pitching overall gets anywhere near as great as they were last year, then this team is going to contend for more than the 3rd wild card spot.

Hope to see another series win against the Jays this weekend and then we get the yanks and pads back to back.

Need to pay for the new guy. Orioles finally get Castillo.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle traded Luis F. Castillo to the Baltimore Orioles in return for cash considerations, and he's not to be confused with three-time All-Star and former Cincinnati Reds hurler Luis M. Castillo. The Mariners designated Luis F. Castillo for assignment on May 6.

Just read on SI that the Blue Jays are playing a night game against the Angels tonight, and they can't use the local airport to fly up to Seattle because it doesn't do departures after 10 PM. So they'll have to drive extra to LAX.

Sounds like they won't get into Seattle until early AM hours tomorrow for the series opener against us.

I'll take any advantage we can get since we're usually the ones fucked by travel.

My post you quoted was the flip side of earlier ones on this thread were I said I do not feel the same sense of the game being over when they fall behind. I was just balancing out the view of the team.

The approach change at the plate up and down the lineup is noticeable and we hope it stays persistent through any losing streaks because it's a much better brand of baseball to watch and actually works to score runs.

I always just ride these steaks of good baseball, but understand they mean nothing more than how are they playing right now today. It can fall apart at any moment so get the joy you can when it presents the opportunity to.

I’d like to believe that Edgar is having a major impact on how this team is performing offensively during his 2nd stint. Understand that he was the hitting advisor from 2018-2024. But now with him and Dan Wilson together, things seems to click.

AL offense:

5th in batting
2nd in HR
3rd in RBI
5th in hits
1st in SB

This to me is a nice surprise.

If this continues throughout the year, Wilson should be heavy manager of the year candidate. And all could be thanks to Edgar.

Jerry Dipoto on Mariners' 22-14 start:

“It's amazing what can happen when a group of players come together and believe in the team. And I think that's what we’re watching. It sounds like a movie or something, but that's the way it's playing.”

I wish I could be more like this but more than 3 decades of being a fan of this team has made it pretty hard lol.

I miss the days when i actually had joy and optimism about this team. I was driving on average 2X a week to the Bainbridge Island ferry to get to the Kingdome back when I was 17 and saw about 100 games at the Kingdome from 93-95 including postseason games, and then was doing the same at Safeco when I got out of the USMC back in 01, and that was obviously a magical season.

20+ years of futility has made me bitter. It's why I enjoy watching the Guardians so much. It's almost the same.

I remember when my mother would randomly decide we were going to go to a game and you could show up an hour or so before first pitch and get seats near 1st base at the walk up ticket window because the demand was that low. Fans wearing bags over their heads or Groucho glasses, they had the san diego chicken for a mascot for a brief time to help entertain the fans because the baseball was pretty much always bad. We went to a lot of games partially because it was super cheap and partially because my mom had a thing for Tom Paciorek who was the first basemen in those first few years of the team.

It wasn't until Lou that I even thought good baseball could be played in this city. It came crashing back down to earth in '01 after that 116 win season.

Then the decades of bad baseball that followed.

For most of that time, baseball was the filler between the end of basketball season and training camp before football season. Then after the Sonics were taken away from us baseball was that filler between just the football seasons. In either case, the following of baseball was usually over by day 1 of training camp and rarely did I ever watch any of the MLB postseason.

So, this is all par for the course. It's more of the same. I'll follow it until either football opens up or they are knocked out of any playoff hopes, whichever comes last. Just like I always do. I'll watch more closely when they are on a hot streak and tune in less/turn off early when they hit those bad spells. But this is the life of a Mariners fan.

Loved Wimpy when he was a guest commentator for games in 01. Never saw him play because I wasn't a baseball fan when i was 8, but he was a super nice guy and talked great about the game.

Oh crap, the last time Jerry talked like this he traded Graveman that night and the team went into a tailspin.
