I understand that this season isn’t about winning, but we should still be mindful of the standings and where the team is at the moment. We’re still not that far behind the Astros.

The longer this team stays “in the hunt”, the better. The kids should know what it feels like to play in meaningful games where the team is actually trying to win. If this was August and we were 20 games back, I wouldn’t have posted my displeasure with the lineup, but we’re not there yet.

The manager and this team should be trying to strike a balance between development and winning right now. It’s both good for the players and the fans who they will be raising ticket prices on for the foreseeable future.
The kids will get plenty of experience in playing in meaningful games when the club is ready to contend. Most of our players who will be on those contenders are not even playing here now. Some are in other organizations or on other big league clubs. One of them might be drafted next month.

Personally, if winning 70 games this year helps us to win 100 games a few years down the road then I will take that over us winning 80 games this year.

Agreed,

You really need to take this year to decide on guys like Odor (contract is keeping him in the lineup), Mazara (really needs to get out of his funk, decision time might be coming soon), Gallo, DDJ (which may have already happened), IKF, Guzman, etc...

I'd be wanting them to do that with pitchers, but we didn't really have anyone worthwhile to trial by fire with yet, short of Hearn, but maybe a couple will make a jump during the course of this season

As much as I would like to see Odor benches or sent down apparently trading Profar was a good thing because the A's are trying to figure how to move hi.

I would trade them Odor for Profar right now.

Questions two yrs. out:
1 Will IKF be our catcher
2 Will Guzman pan out at 1B
3 Who will be at 2B
4 Will Elvis remain at SS
5 Who will be at 3rd
6 Will Mazara pan out
7 Who will be in CF
Assuming we will be contenders it appears a lot has to be done. Above are just a few concerns and pitching not even mentioned. What do you think?

In 2 years I think IKF and Guzman will still be in place, but I have slight doubts about both of them longer than that. Odor will still be under contract so he will still be in the lineup. Elvis will probably still be at SS. 3B and CF will probably be free agents. Either Chuck LeBlanc or Disobel Arias could force their way to 3B in 2 years if they continue to develop.

I think the real changes are coming 3 years from now or 2 and a half maybe.. Tejeda could be ready before then but he is blocked by Elvis and Odor.

Sam Huff is the best chance we have at making a real change in personnel within 2 years.

Anyone in the rotation, not named Minor, tells you we are not in the hunt.
Ha sometimes a team can overachieve and be in the hunt event when they have no business to be there. Lynn is not a total scrub IMO

That makes it hard for management to stick to their plan when that happens; it can paralyze progress. If we are close to a second wildcard birth at the deadline it will take a strong determination to the plan to trade off veterans who are producing. If we are going to have a bad stretch of 4 to 6 weeks it would be best to have it before the middle of July.

Luckily a doubt we're anywhere close to a wild card of any kind come July, the Rays, Red Sox, Yankees, Astros and Indians are too good... and probably the Twins, they might be leading the division, but I could see them going through a bad stretch and end up out of the playoffs altogether

Has there been any press on how DDJ reacted to his demotion?.......And how is Calhoun doing?

Calhoun has a 931 OPS for the year and 1.179 over his last 10 games. He has played 3 games at 2B.

A little more on Henriquez from Scott Lucas:

'18-year-old Ronny Henriquez has a 34% strikeout rate. His first six outs were strikeouts. In those two innings, Henriquez threw 28 pitches, of which only four were balls and nine were swinging strikes."

Lots to think about with no easy answers.

Management will be faced with a lot of decisions. They aren't going to get them all right, but they really need to get the best majority of them right or all of the rebuilding will be for nothing.

I’m glad to see that the vast majority of this board has a low opinion of odor.

I wish some of the coaches and management thought the same way.
