Wow. Dan Patrick is talking about and having a little trouble. He knew him pretty well.
Lots of people will be honoring him today....expect a good portion of the NBA show to be devoted to him....even with the game tonight. I don't think it will be a little 3-5 minute segment.

Probably 15 minutes or so IMO.

West was a little before my time (as a player)... so I just scanned over his wikipedia page:

One thing that stood out to me was the multiple testimonies to his work ethic, competitiveness and his personal hatred for losing:

"His first wife Martha Kane recalled that her husband often had difficulties opening up to her. After a big loss, the Wests would drive home and she would try to console him, but West would say "get out" at the home porch and drive away—an experience that "killed" her as a wife.[88]...

... West was also regarded for his extreme mental toughness and his exemplary work ethic. The NBA described West as "obsessive perfectionism, unabashed confidence, and an uncompromising will to win... a level of intensity so high it could melt lead".[10] Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn once said: "He took a loss harder than any player I've ever known. He would sit by himself and stare into space. A loss just ripped his guts out."[10]
"

Those characteristics seem, all too often, to be the furnace for greatness.

Anyway... RIP.

And not just as a player. He was among the greatest team execs as well.
Combining championships as an active player and executive, has anyone had more championships? I think he had 11 in all.

Not sure how accurate the portrayal was but he was my favorite character on Winning Time.

It was accurate but embellished a bit. For example, the trashing his office didn't happen.

But it did take him years to be able to be in the building during the finals (especially vs. the Celtics). Even then, he couldn't sit in the stands or the owners box. He'd stand in the tunnel to watch those games.

And not just as a player. He was among the greatest team execs as well.
Exactly. That’s why I referred to him as "one of the greatest people in the history of the Association”. So much more than a great player or a great front office exec. Almost impossible to quantify his greatness in those terms alone.

Amazing man.

I was 11 when the Lakers grabbed him. There wasn't a hell of a lot of national coverage of anything except newspapers and magazines,.
I was hooked on the way he played. Loved him. Hated the Lakers.

Save me a seat Jerry. How did we ever grow this old so fast??

Peace be with you.

The version I created of you in Kobe Courtside was an incredible scoring machine.
