HOw many times have we seen this story played out with guys on our defense??

Orakpo
Amerson
Riley

IM sure there a few others Im missing.

I dont really think any of those 3 were that bad to have let go. All made sense at the time which is really all that matters.

I guess you could say that.... provided you ignore how many more draft picks, and roster spots and cap dollars we have thrown at the respective positions since letting these guy go.

Cap dollars...very little.

Draft picks sure, but if you believe in BPA, the point is moot.

As Breed will recall I was torn on the decision to release Rak. I totally understood it and really was not upset with the move. But I did get kind of tired of the talk that he wasn't that good. He isn't a great player, not even close, but he possesses a very rare and valuable skill as a pass rusher. And since they are so hard to find and provide such an important role on a defense they all get paid. As they should.

I doubt the Titans are regretting their decision much these day, at the same time Washington probably isn't either.

Actually not that many. As has been pointed out several times - until recently the Redskins biggest problem has been in acquiring talent in the 1st place & picking up very little via the draft (an area where some mistakes are still being made but they are light years ahead of where they were in the past).

You can identify players like this for just about any team, and the Redskins have some players on their roster that were cast off by other teams for various reasons. Most fans wanted Riley and Amerson gone so don't really have much of an issue with them. Orakpo was a $$ decision - tough one to decide in either case (easy to judge these in hindsight).

The bigger issue for me would be why a player like Amerson didn't thrive in DC & this could be a player development issue or perhaps the player just needing a change of scenery. Not specific to Amerson, but this type of thing is a huge concern for me w/ Barry. Can he get the most out of his players both on gameday and over time. Not sure, but he isn't looking good in this area to date. Hopefully he & the team show promise in this area moving forward.

Once again I will say that last year Smith had 8 sacks, this year Murphy has 8 sacks and counting. I see no loss.

Who is Smith? If you mean Rak he had 7 last year and 9 so far this season.

As for the others I echo So Cal's thoughts, that was a good post. Amerson was pretty bad here and nobody was shedding a tear when he left, same with Riley. But yeah it is frustrating when they go elsewhere and fulfill their promise, Carlos Rogers comes to mind because our coaches could not figure out that he needed glasses.

He means Preston Smith. He of the 8 sack rookie season but is apparently in the Witness protection program this year.

I guess my point is, we have let guys walk or in some cases released them thinking they would easily be replaced. They go to the next stop and become solid if not more than solid players. We continue to pump time, money and draft picks into spot that should have been solved.... At what point does it become... its not the players its the piss poor coaching?? Rak hasnt missed a game due to injury since the Titans havent asked him to do anything more than rush the passer. Amerson is a starter and arguably doing better than the guy we replaced him with.

You could also throw Alf into that list of guys who we apparently thought wasnt worth the coin because we had.. Matt fucking Jones. Stellar move there. :thumb:

I got it now. But if you really believe Rak has been healthy because he hasn't been in pass coverage, well I think that's a stretch.

Again... look at the type of injury he had when here. And the situations in which he generally got them. I think what he is being asked to do, or more importantly what he is NOT being asked to do does have some factor on his ability to actually stay healthy. His best years here as far as health and productivity were when all we had him do was rush the passer. No dropping back in coverage.

Beyond Rak though.. I think if we had safety's that could actually play the position, and Inside Linebackers that were better than simply average... Kerrigan and Murphy would be better than they have been thus far.

Eh. Again - I don't think that they have let go of much talent - they just have not had much talent to begin with, but I agree with you on the coaching especially in the development area. They need to take a hard look at this over the offseason. Sure they will get better with an influx of talent on D. However - why not get even better than that by developing these guys to get the most out of their talents?

As for Morris - eh - I still don't believe they lost that much. He really doesn't have to do much for the Boys - I am not sure that he would have added much for the Skins this season. Anyhow - water under the bridge - I think that they will be fine with the running game moving forward (& believe that this will include adding a key back next offseason).

Not for nothing, but I dont think I have ever seen you say any personnel move the team has made in adding a player or letting one go was a mistake. I get it you are a look for the positive side kind of guy.

And on the days he got hurt I heard it was partly cloudy every time. So blaming the clouds sounds about as rational as your theory.

I she'd a tear when Amerson left. I thought it was a huge mistake to cut a 2nd rounder in their rookie contract.

I can see that, I held out hope too. But it seemed like he had his chance . Obviously you were right and they were wrong.

Yeah, I'll co-sign this. Dave was a big Rak fan for sure. And taking away Rak's 2 injury matred seasons. He had 38.5 sacks with the Skins. And in his almost 2 seasonjs with the Titans he has 16 sacks in 28 games. So lets say he's a 9, 10 sacks a year guy. That gets you paid in the NFL, not top dollar, but paid nontheless.

Shark,
That's what I see Rak as. A 9 to 10 sacks a year guy. Last year Smith/Murphy totalled 11.5 sacks to Rak's 7 sacks. This year Murphy/Smith have 11.5 sacks to Rak's 9 sacks. So Murphy/Smith haver done for the last two years what Rak likley would've done imo and both Smith/Murphy combined are cheaper than Rak contract-wise at the moment.

Don't be too shocked if the Skins are in a similar Rak/RK situation in a couple seasons with Smith/Murphy.

I thought so as well.

After reading this and other trhreads. I've come to the conclusion Barry has to go after this year. As well as most of the other def coaches. The only def coach I'd consider keeping would be Perry Fewel, although if Josh Norman keeps getting penalties I may have to re-address Fewel's position.

The only thing the Skins really seem better than decent at is coverage when it comes to defense, but can anyonbe identify a thumper (big hitter) anywhere on defense.....I can't. How bout an excellent or very good tackler......me either. We're OK at getting sacks as well I guess. Though they seem to come more i the earlier stages of the game.

But year, the entire defense neees something and I don't think it presently resides or hangs out at Redskins Park.

It's been three years and if anything Barry's defenses have gotten worse. Sure the talent is lacking but since when is a lack of talent an excuse in the NFL asks every single former coach of the Cleveland Browns.

I just have my doubts that anything will happen. Jay's team just doesn't makes changes. They continued to start terrible players way too long like Burton, Lich etc.; they continue to throw fade patterns; they continue to adandon the run. Change comes very slowly in Ashburn, Virginia.
